Job Summary

Provide interpretation between English and American Sign Language (ASL) for deaf staff and faculty in the Center for Language Studies.

Essential Functions

Sign Language Interpreter I

  • Skill/Certification levels as noted below (Utah Novice Certification).
  • Ability to hear auditory information at a normal level with or without auditory aids.
  • Ability to hear, comprehend, and retain in working memory, auditory stimuli.
  • Arrange seating, standing, or other positioning to ensure unobstructed visual communication.
  • Ensure lighting and auditory reception is appropriate to facilitate effective communication.
  • Mediate understanding cross culturally and bi-linguistically.
  • Inform parties involved when discrepancies in communication exist because of cultural or linguistic variation.
  • Provide interpretation for meetings of minimal complexity.

Sign Language Interpreter II

  • Skill/Certification levels as noted below (Utah Professional certification, Utah Master* certification, RID CI* certification, or RID CT* certification).
  • Ability to hear auditory information at a normal level with or without auditory aids.
  • Ability to hear, comprehend, and retain in working memory, auditory stimuli.
  • Arrange seating, standing, or other positioning to ensure unobstructed visual communication.
  • Ensure lighting and auditory reception is appropriate to facilitate effective communication.
  • Mediate understanding cross culturally and bi-linguistically.
  • Inform parties involved when discrepancies in communication exist because of cultural or linguistic variation.
  • Provide interpretation for meetings of moderate complexity.

Sign Language Interpreter III

  • Skill/Certification levels as noted below (RID NIC certification, RID NIC Advanced* certification, RID NIC Master* certification, RID CI* and CT* certifications, Utah Professional certification, Utah Master* certification, RID CI* certification, or RID CT* certification
  • Ability to hear auditory information at a normal level with or without auditory aids.
  • Ability to hear, comprehend, and retain in working memory, auditory stimuli.
  • Arrange seating, standing, or other positioning to ensure unobstructed visual communication.
  • Ensure lighting and auditory reception is appropriate to facilitate effective communication.
  • Mediate understanding cross culturally and bi-linguistically.
  • Inform parties involved when discrepancies in communication exist because of cultural or linguistic variation.
  • Provide interpretation for meetings of high complexity.

Minimum education/experience required:

Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Preferred:

Bachelor degree from an accredited institution in any field of study.

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, or certifications required:

Sign Language Interpreter I

  • Utah Novice Certification

Sign Language Interpreter II

  • Utah Professional certification, or
  • Utah Master* certification, or
  • RID CI* certification, or
  • RID CT* certification

Sign Language Interpreter III

  • RID NIC certification, or
  • RID NIC Advanced* certification or
  • RID NIC Master* certification or
  • RID CI* and CT* certifications or

Compensation: DOQ

On-Call Only. Variable Shifts. No minimum weekly hours guaranteed.

The essential functions of this position require in person work. Any exceptions are granted by university policies through employee relations. This position is located in an on campus workspace with the expectation that work takes place on campus to provide in person services and availability to BYU students, staff, administrators, and campus community during established and regular office hours.

In addition to essential functions of the job performed during regular office hours, this position may require work on nights and weekends for the purpose of providing services to students, achieving the objectives of departments, and contribute to the mission of Campus Life.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints must hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend.
