Position Description


Coordinates operations in a Fleet Operations Division Equipment Shop. Serves as a lead worker for a group of skilled craft employees responsible for the repair and maintenance of TxDOT vehicles and equipment. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

  • Coordinates and assigns work to equipment mechanics, welders, and haul truck drivers in an equipment shop, and refers employee performance concerns to the Equipment Supervisor.
  • Prioritizes the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Provides guidance regarding difficult or unusual repairs of vehicles and equipment as required.
  • Coordinates the vehicle and equipment make-ready process.
  • Coordinates the vehicle and equipment sale process.
  • Approves the acquisition of parts requested by equipment mechanics.
  • Coordinates with district personnel and vendors.
  • Performs duties of the Equipment Supervisor in their absence.
  • Enters work orders and other information relating to vehicle and equipment repairs into the fleet information system.
  • Uses various technology tools to improve shop operations efficiency.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: 6 years automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics, maintenance, and repair experience.

  • Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.
  • Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Proficient skill in:

  • Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints and maps.
  • Maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups.
  • Proficient skill in using, maintaining, and repairing tools and equipment of the trade.
  • Coordinating labor, materials and equipment.
  • Training in a field environment.
  • Using computers and applicable programs, applications and systems.
  • Expert skill in prioritizing and organizing work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

Considerable knowledge of:

  • Inventory/stock control procedures.
  • Fleet equipment maintenance and repair
  • Fleet management and operations
  • Equipment used in transportation construction and roadway maintenance work
  • Developing and implementing programs

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading

  • During emergency situations, may be required to work hours other than regularly scheduled including nights, holidays and weekends.
