Job Location: This position is with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Division of Environmental Quality, Environmental Services Program, and will be located at 2710 West Main, Jefferson City, MO 65109.

This position brings with it the challenges and satisfaction of overseeing the generation of high-quality and defensible laboratory analyses that ensures Missouri’s public drinking water is safe and the waters of Missouri are clean. The laboratory relies upon trained analysts and well-maintained, state-of-the-art instruments to fulfill its mission. Data generated is frequently relied upon to make regulatory and policy decisions. The work environment is fast-paced and operations rely upon several moving components working together towards a common objective.

What you’ll do:

  • Assume leadership role for Chemists in the Metals Laboratory.
  • Develop knowledge and proficiency in performing all methods used in the Metals Laboratory including sample preparation, appropriate analysis, and reporting of data.
  • Ensure the timely production of quality data through oversight of work flow management.
  • Validate or approve data generated as it is imported into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for final approval.
  • Manage Standard Operating Procedure reviews and revisions and technical assistance for the Metals Laboratory.
  • Assist the Inorganic Unit with learning new analytical methods.
  • Manage the process for ordering items required for laboratory function, such as consumables and instrument repair.
  • Responsible for proper training of interns and team members new to the Metals Laboratory.
  • Complete the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Drinking Water Laboratory Certification Officer training program within the designated time period.

All you need for success:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field and 2-5 years of experience
  • Applicants must have knowledge and experience in Analytical Chemistry
  • Applicants must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to pass a background check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with a Laboratory Information Management System or similar application.
  • Working knowledge of environmental sampling processes and laboratory operations.
  • Experience in the analysis of metals by ICP-MS and/or ICP/OES.
  • Knowledge of the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Clean Water Act methodologies.
  • Enjoy working in a team based atmosphere.
