General Summary
Provides geologic research support related to Michigan Upper Peninsula Precambrian geology and critical minerals for existing grants, and acquire new grants.

Major Duties
  • Conducts geologic and hydrogeologic mapping.


  • Writes proposals and publications, including geologic and hydrogeologic maps.

  • Completes and applies for grants.

  • Mentors staff, students, and contractors.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution.


  • Five years’ relevant experience.

  • Experience with geologic data and publications that meet USGS GeMS standards.

  • Experience mapping in continental Precambrian terrains, and in integrating geophysical data with mineral deposit models to support mapping to identify potential resource areas.

  • Laboratory experience in sieve and grain size analysis.

  • Relevant student and/or staff supervision experience.

Desired Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree with research focus on critical minerals, igneous or metamorphic petrology, or sedimentary systems preferred from an accredited institution.


  • Experience mapping and/or conducting research focused on Michigan Upper Peninsula Precambrian bedrock.

  • Experience with LiDAR.

Physical requirements and working conditions
  • Light work with some physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds, but rarely moving more than 25 to 50 pounds.


  • Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc.

  • Substantial travel and outdoor fieldwork required, within the state of Michigan.
