About the Library:
The City of Carlsbad Library & Cultural Arts department is seeking an enthusiastic and technologically savvy Senior Librarian to oversee its Collections & Technical Services division. This position is responsible for general oversight of the division, statistical reporting, project management, serving as the collections and technical services liaison to senior leadership and subject-matter expert for the library system, and for guiding and motivating a team of 9.5 FTE employees who are responsible for the ordering, receiving, cataloging and processing of print, media, and electronic content.

The Library &Cultural Arts Department provides educational, informational, and cultural arts services for all community residents, which contributes to a high quality of life by supporting lifelong learning, the pursuit of knowledge, and creating community gathering places. The Library & Cultural Arts Department operates three public facilities that include the Carlsbad City Library, the Georgina Cole Library and the Library Learning Center, along with presenting public art in various formats throughout the community. The Carlsbad City Library is also home to the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium and the Cannon Art Gallery which support a variety of visual and performing arts programs, arts education and cultural arts services.

The Position:
Positions in the Senior Librarian class are heads of major library divisions and administer a variety of special programs, resources, and services. Incumbents are expected to exercise creativity and analytical skills to not only oversee the day-to-day operations, but to also provide leadership toward continually improving department-wide services and processes.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced supervisor with a history of working with vendors, colleagues and internal staff to deliver excellent services and proven ability to consider diversity, equity and inclusion in the execution of their duties.

Additionally, the candidate shall have a proven track record of assessing emerging technology and technical services trends and incorporating those that advance the mission of the department. The Library is looking for an enthusiastic professional with excellent interpersonal, empathetic and respectful communication skills. The individual should be forward thinking, an optimistic go-getter and should exhibit flexibility. They will also be able to receive and internalize feedback from multiple sources, understand confidentiality, assume positive intent and react to stressful situations in a professional manner.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plans, develops, and coordinates system-wide acquisitions and technical services functions for the department.
  • Keeps abreast of current and emerging trends, issues, and methods pertaining to metadata standards and electronic resource management.

  • Identifies, implements and monitors standards and procedures for the procurement, cataloging and processing of materials in the Library's collection.

  • Works with vendors, City IT and Library staff to test, configure, update, and troubleshoot various electronic tools and resources.

  • Coordinates with staff in optimizing the use of SirsiDynix Symphony capabilities throughout the Library.

  • Performs copy and original cataloging of print and electronic resources.

  • Selects materials that support the scope of the collection.

  • Evaluates materials for rebinding, mending and replacement.

  • Ensures quality and consistency of digital records and metadata determines means and methods for assessing production quality and tracks statistics and feedback.

  • Serves as a liaison to Genealogy & Carlsbad History staff in support of archival digital collection development and metadata, including electronic records management.

  • Serves as a liaison to Cultural Arts staff in support of accessioning art work and developing finding aids using best practices.

  • Recruits, selects and trains professional librarians and assistants.

  • Trains and supervises assigned library staff assigns work priorities, manages and provides input for disciplinary matters.

  • Demonstrates leadership, coaching and mentoring skills.

  • Assists patrons in making effective use of library facilities by answering questions and helping them use the library's resources.

  • Responds to citizen requests for information.

  • Represents the Library in the community and at professional meetings.

  • Develops contacts in the community as a means of locating materials and promoting partnership and outreach opportunities.

  • Participates in departmental team and committee work.

  • Assists in providing a variety of staff assistance services to the Deputy Library Directors, Library & Cultural Arts Director, Library Board of Trustees, Friends of the Library, Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation and other support organizations.

  • Prepares written reports and oral presentations, complex analysis regarding library service and personnel policies, and similar work.

  • Administers the $1.3 million library-wide materials budget along with the services and supplies to acquire, catalog and process those materials.

  • Maintains positive ongoing relationships with external groups in order to identify community needs and enhance public services.

  • Coordinates library related activities with other City Departments and divisions, and with outside agencies.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Advanced principles, theories and practices of professional library work. Tools and practices in processing library materials.
  • Technological trends and developments relevant to public library operations and services.

  • Standards and principles of supervision.

  • Principles of public relations and community outreach.

  • Managing and maintaining ILS and related database repositories (system administration, record import and export, querying, reporting).


Ability to
:

  • Develop and implement library programs and services applicable to the needs of the community.
  • Manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously and effectively in a fast paced environment.

  • Accept, manage and incorporate change and a willingness to experiment with various organizational models for best managing metadata across the division.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

  • Perform technical library tasks.

  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including potential donors, businesses, and community organizations.

  • Analyze problems, identify alternate solutions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.

  • Select, supervise, train and evaluate staff.


Experience & Education

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Three (3) years of professional library work experience, preferably including two (2) years of prior library supervisory experience. Completion of a Masters of Library & Information Science degree from an American Library Association accredited library school.
