Senior Equipment Operator

As a Senior Equipment Operator, you will operate the full range of heavy equipment involved in major construction, maintenance, and repair projects for the Airport's (Colorado Springs Airport)Field Maintenance Division.

Essential Job Functions
- the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
  • Provide guidance and direction to staff performing concrete and asphalt repair
  • Train and monitor progress of lower level co-workers; oversee seasonal staff
  • Assist with storm water management and maintenance
  • Act as lead equipment operator during snow removal operations; serve as primary contact for the Snow Boss
  • Maintain plants, trees, shrubs, landscape, fence, and signage
  • Maintain all paved surfaces, including patching, painting, snow removal, and sweeping
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
Knowledge of:
  • Operation and maintenance requirements of the full range of heavy power-driven equipment
  • FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) regulations as they pertain to maintaining an airfield
  • Basic principles of civil engineering
  • General construction and maintenance work
  • Pertinent traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in heavy equipment operations; methods and techniques of traffic control
  • Pertinent safety and environment regulations, occupational hazards, and standard safety practices
  • Methods and techniques of pavement marking
Ability to:
  • Understand, learn, and apply FAA rules and regulations pertaining to a Part 139 airport
  • Understand, learn, and apply TSA (Transportation Security Administration) rules and regulations pertaining to the Airport
  • Safely operate the full range of complex heavy power-driven equipment
  • Safely and properly operate assigned vehicle
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Perform a variety of skilled construction and maintenance tasks
  • Read and interpret maps, sketches, drawings, specifications, and technical manuals
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Apply and explain pertinent, laws, rules, regulations, and City policies and procedures
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships

Successful candidates will have

  • A high school diploma or GED
  • Five years of full-time experience operating heavy construction and maintenance equipment
  • Possess and maintain upon hire a valid, non-probationary Class B Colorado CDL (Commercial Driver's License) not subject to restrictions related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
  • Possess, or obtain within one year of hire, and maintain a valid, non-probationary Class A Colorado CDL (Commercial Driver's License) not subject to restrictions related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
  • Possess, or obtain within six months, an air brake endorsement
One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.
Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements

Ideal candidates will also have

  • Experience maintaining an airfield during winter activities
  • Experience maintaining commercial irrigation systems

Additional Information

You will be required to report for snow removal duty which includes shift work, schedule changes, and standby time.

The selected candidate must pass (or have already passed) a fingerprint-based criminal history records check as required by the Transportation Security Administration.

Physical Demands: This position requires the ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods; lift 20 to 50 pounds occasionally, 10 to 25 pound frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly; pull, reach, bend, climb, and kneel; and the use of fingers, both hands, and both legs. The ability to distinguish colors is also required.

The City of Colorado Springs offers additional compensation depending on the position, area of assignment, and specific job assignments, including shift differential, pay differential, acting or lead, special assignment, hazard pay, longevity, cell phone allowance, uniform allowance, relocation, awards, standby, call out, compensatory time off, tuition, overtime, extra duty, incentive, holiday premium, proficiency, and vacation sell back.
