Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Maryland Park Service Headquarters located in Annapolis, MD, is currently accepting applications for one (1) Seasonal Contractual Interpretation and Naturalist Assistant. This 10-month position provides direct support to the Chief of Interpretation.

The selected candidate will provide assistance with ongoing and new MPS interpretive programs including Create Your Own State Park, Junior Rangers, Scales & Tales and Es Mi Parque. Primary duties will include development and organization of curriculum, and activities or displays for programming and outreach. Duties may also include producing newsletters, advertising, and social media; with some graphic design and website development.

Additional duties will include assisting with exhibit development, topic research and coordinating internal and external communication on interpretive programs and special events. This position will primarily work in the Annapolis area- MPS Headquarters Office, but will be heavily involved with state-wide programs and initiatives for the Maryland Park Service and may require occasional travel throughout the state of Maryland.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A minimum of 60 credit hours of college level education in a natural resource-related field, recreation and parks, public relations or education.

Experience: One year of experience or equivalent in park or natural resources-related work, interpretive programming, public outreach and/or environmental education is required for this position.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong graphic design skills with demonstrated proficiency in utilizing programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Publisher, Canva, and Adobe InDesign to create flyers, brochures, presentations or website content to inform and attract attention to programs or events;
  • Strong writing and research compilation skills;
  • Ability to perform routine research and prepare summary and a recommendation with a minimum of direct supervision;
  • Excellent organizational skills including data management using spreadsheets (e.g., tracking program attendance) and information management on shared Google drives;
  • Preference for any of the following or similar, related certifications: NAI Certified Interpretive Guide, Maryland Environmental Education Certification and/or Master Naturalist or Master Gardener Certification;
  • Four-year degree in a natural resource-related field, recreation and parks, public relations or education.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle, UTV or golf cart. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland and five points or fewer on their current driving record.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants selected for employment may undergo an employment background investigation, including, but not limited to: employment reference check, education verification, driving record check (if the position requires employees to drive a vehicle) and a criminal history check including fingerprinting.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
