The Seasonal Horticulture Technician is responsible for general oversight of a portion of grounds, irrigation, lawn care, supervision of volunteers, and horticulture education. They will have a deep understanding through accumulated experience and education of appropriate horticultural practices for the Intermountain West and be able to consider bird species and exhibit planning. They possess a drive to educate and inspire peers, volunteers, and interns through problem solving, creativity of design, and organization.

Position Details:

Schedule: 20-32 hr/wk, flexibility possible with setting schedule

Compensation: $15/hr, depending on experience

Primary Duties:

  • Maintain Tracy Aviary plants, trees, shrubs, and gardens by use of appropriate pruning, planting, transplanting, propagation, irrigation, and IPM
  • Weeding, watering, fertilization, deadheading, raking, and mulching.
  • Outreach to guests, community, Tracy Aviary education camps, etc. including tours and guest experiences
  • Lawn care primary
  • Assist Aviary staff in dealing with facilities problems or emergencies
  • Other tasks related to Tracy Aviary’s Operation Department

Qualifications:

  • College degree in a related field is preferred
  • Experience in horticulture, agriculture, or a related field
  • Demonstrated interest for a career in the field of horticulture
  • This position involves working in all weather conditions, lifting heavy supplies, the use of various hand and motorized tools, and following policy and procedures.
  • An earnest, inviting, lifelong learner’s attitude is essential
  • Effective in working well collaboratively and managing time efficiently
  • Highly motivated and innovative, well organized, eager to take on new tasks and meet commitments

Additional and Preferred Qualifications:

  • Utah Pesticide Applicators License encouraged
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace
  • Familiarity with power tools and their safety requirements
  • Knowledge of and commitment to justice, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in the community and workplace

Special Requirements:

  • Ability to remain active, lift more than 50 lbs, and move around our 8-acre campus for several hours at a time in all types of weather conditions.
