TITLE: School Guidance Counselor, K-12 with $6,000 signing bonus

REPORTS TO: Building Principals

JOB FUNCTION: The guidance counselor will guide and support all students through counseling, scheduling and career/college advisement

DISTRICT DESCRIPTION: Houghton Lake Community Schools has approximately 1,200 students and is located in the center of the Lower Peninsula in northern Michigan. Our families enjoy the benefits of living in an area thriving on tourism as most of our district surrounds beautiful Houghton
Lake. We have about 80 schools of choice students from outside of the district and county.
Currently, 17% of our students qualify for special education services.

The District has two preschool classrooms with additional preschools available within the community.
There is one PreK-6th grade elementary school, one 7th -12th grade junior/senior high school and
Community Education with alternative education opportunities. Career and technical education opportunities are available as well as Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment college courses.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Counsel groups or individual students through the development of educational and career plans, and coordinate and provide assistance regarding dual enrollment, career tech, and
Early Middle College opportunities focused on post secondary employment or matriculation to college/university

● Counsel small groups and individual students with problems; refer severe problems to appropriate community resources, and conduct risk assessments as needed

● Evaluate the school counseling program annually and make recommendations to principals
● Conduct counseling activities in the classroom in conjunction with administration and teachers
● Assesses and counsels students based on observations, conversations, and test results
● Assist students in development of EDPs
● Coordinate career/college advisement activities for all students
● Serve as the district 504 coordinator
● Assists principal with all class scheduling procedures and new student orientation
● Coordinate and facilitate informational meetings for students/parents regarding additional learning options, financial aid, high school requirements, etc
● Ensure all students are meeting graduation requirements. Assist in developing personal curriculums as needed, credit recovery options, and/or other plans/programs
● Provides orientation and registration for students new to the school
● Counsels/Guides students and parents in use of test results for education/career planning
● Coordinates services with outside agencies providing student assistance
● Responds to crisis situations when appropriate

● Serve as district assessment coordinator for state, national, and district assessments
● Coordinate and provide assistance to students and parents regarding scholarships and

FAFSA completion
● Other duties as assigned

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:
● School Counselor (NT) K-12

Preferred:
● Possess certification or endorsement in another subject/content area
