Job Title: School Chef

Old Mission Peninsula School is seeking a dedicated team member who enjoys working around children and working with the entire school team (crew) to create a school climate where staff and students are excited to show up and put their best foot forward, socially and academically. The OMPS Chef is someone who is willing to deliver exceptional food delivery services as well as put a smile on our students’ faces.

Daily responsibilities include:

  • Planning lunch menus.
  • Shopping and placing orders for food and kitchen supplies within the approved budget and in consultation with School Leadership or Board Treasurer.
  • Preparation of school lunches.
  • Cleaning and sanitation of the food service area and serveware following the end of the lunch period.
  • Ensuring food served meets quality and freshness expectations along with proper portioning.
  • Ensuring Food Safety laws are met: the chef must ensure that all food safety rules and Health Department licensing requirements are followed. This includes making sure the OMPS Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) are followed.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organization of all food service areas to ensure the image we strive for at OMPS is being met. This includes back rooms, equipment, inside and outside of coolers and freezer, and serving equipment and area. Cleaning schedules will be developed and followed, and all areas will remain clean during working hours.
  • Accessing the OMPS food ordering software to assist in planning and preparation of lunches.
  • Ensuring appropriate instruction and training, including in food safety regulations and customer service, for any volunteers or additional food service staff.
  • Loading, unloading and moving supplies, items, and other equipment.
  • Following OMPS recycling and waste management guidelines. Working to reduce waste on an ongoing basis.
  • Working with School and Board Leadership to complete compliance requirements.
  • Performing all assigned duties in a manner in which contributes to the safety and well-being of the students, staff, and visitors.
  • Ensuring all applicable school policies are followed.
  • Leadership: The OMPS Chef is a school leader known by the entire school community, and as such, is expected to demonstrate professional conduct to students and staff and act in a way that is motivating to employees and/or volunteers of OMPS.
  • Organization & Cleanliness: The OMPS Chef must ensure all food service areas are organized and clean throughout the workday and that more deep cleaning is regularly done. At OMPS we always want to make sure we are preparing food in a clean and healthy environment.
  • Confidentiality: The OMPS Chef has access to information about OMPS including but not limited to funding, student information, and similar data. This information is available to you to help you do your job more effectively and under no circumstances should you share this with any person working for OMPS without permission or with anybody outside of OMPS for any reason. Any breach of confidentiality will result in disciplinary action including the possibility of termination.

  • Pre-employment Screening: this position will require successful completion of a criminal background and fingerprint check.
  • The ability to read and apply documents such as safety rules, operating, and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at a level of proficiency that permits quality job performance.
  • Ability to work standing for long periods of time and lift and/or move 25 pounds.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, effective relationships with students, staff, supervisor, and co-workers.
  • Possess a willingness to learn new job skills and techniques.
  • 40 hours per week Monday-Friday throughout the school year calendar of 180 school days with additional 5 days for pre-school year preparations and post school year cleanup. Additional days such as snow day make-up days may be required.
  • Carrying out food service during lunch periods.

Essential Functions:

  • Working with school staff to provide monthly menus on a timely basis.
  • Ensuring proper care and use of supplies and equipment to maintain safety and sanitation.
  • Communicating with School Leadership to ensure all job responsibilities are being met.
  • Participating in OMPS safety and emergency planning, training, drills.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
