Harrison Western was founded in 1968 and has provided superior design and construction services to the mining and civil industries for over 50 years. We have entered a Joint Venture with Shaft Sinkers to construct a new utility shaft at WIPP (Waste isolation Pilot Plant). WIPP is a Department of Energy facility located near Carlsbad, New Mexico. When the project is completed, the final shaft will measure 26 feet in diameter and extend to 2,275 feet below the surface.


We are seeking a dynamic Health and Safety Coordinator to assist the safety manager with the aspects of company safety and health program for the WIPP Shaft Sinking Project. They provide proper planning, training, project inspections and coach safe work behaviors.


The WIPP project is expected to take up to three years to complete. Open positions will be based on the operational need and may be months to years in duration. All positions are located at the WIPP site, 26 miles southeast of Carlsbad, New Mexico.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Support Safety Manager in writing Health and Safety Plans, Safe Work Plans, SOPs, submittals, job start up, incident reporting, and compliance assistance
  • Perform jobsite audits
  • Track and report safety stats & analysis, trends, lessons learned
  • Workmen’s Comp Management & Return to Work Management
  • Tracking and coordination of training needs (Safety and Compliance only) of all employees
  • Will assist in MSHA training and any equipment training, and documentation related to the training of personnel.
  • OSHA, MSHA & DOE reporting & citation management
  • Actively working with employees of the WIPP site as well as DOE
  • Managing PPE supplies and distributing them to personnel

Skills and Specifications:

  • 5 years of safety experience required
  • Good knowledge of MSHA Regulations
  • Understanding of computers – Microsoft Office and other systems
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA Regulations
  • Work in a standing, seated, or other physical positions
  • Must be able to obtain ATF Clearance
  • 2 years of shaft sinking, preferably in a safety role
