Employment Description – Resort Engineer at Lutsen Resort in Lutsen, Minnesota

Mission: Operate the department on a daily basis with the focus on the guest! Lead a department that takes pride in knowing their hard work leads to creating a great experience for the guest! Every task completed by the maintenance and facilities team should be done in a manor that takes pride in knowing it was done perfectly to create a flawless guest experience! Most importantly, to ensure the resort is always in a “presentable” position; well maintained facilities and neat and tidy and well cared for grounds.

Position Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Operate the Maintenance Department on a daily basis with the focus on the guest! Daily staff meetings are to finish emphasizing that complete guest satisfaction is a priority
  • Operate the department on daily basis with the mindset and focus that the maintenance team’s number one job is to make sure that the guest have a seamless experience and everything is done in the best interest of the guest
  • Execute full functionality of our Maintenance Work Order Software to fully benefit from the automated systems provided from “VR Scheduler”
  • Create and maintain daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly checklists as needed for the department in regards to daily operations or preventative maintenance needs likewise
  • Daily facilities checks: Everything in working order, presentable. Interior & exterior. (window screens, PTAC covers, all exterior lights working, all interior lights working)
  • Revenue management; ensuring all time and materials are accounted and billed appropriately
  • Create staff schedules based on needs and full work days with associated time tracking per task
  • Maintain time management of scheduled staff
  • Maintain labour and supply budgets
  • Manage and maintain department inventory
  • Maintain over all quality of the resort buildings and grounds
  • Maintain consistent training and procedures for “quality of units” through the “work order” process
  • Maintain and manage “resort presentation” via the “neat and tidy rule”
  • Maintain excellent guest satisfaction scores of above 90% via our guest surveys
  • Fully oversee the maintenance department operations and personnel
  • Ensure resort operations are always in compliance with licensing and regulations as well as safety laws
  • Ensure that pool facilities are always well looked after and “safe”
  • Ensure the company service standards are fully embraced and supported by the entire department
  • Ensure the department has the tools they need for a successful job at all times
  • Manage employee uniforms for the department and ensure all personnel of the department look presentable and professional
  • Review staffing levels on a regular basis and forecast staffing needs based on occupancy
  • Coordinate with the HR director to make sure department is always fully staffed based employment needs forecasted by occupancy
  • Participate in safety meetings and manage the department in accordance to achieving an accident free workplace
  • Lead and manage a “positive” team and making sure the workplace has zero negativity
  • Lead and manage a “professional team” and ensure service standards are being met at all times
  • Employee management; leading with enthusiasm, complimenting where compliments are due and disciplining where discipline needs to happen, and coaching where support is needed
  • Lead and manage “on ground level” limiting hours in the office to a necessity level
  • Reviewing staff performance on a regular basis
  • Encourage staff communication. Employees always have observations and ideas, they are the eyes on the ground. Sometimes their notes are not relevant and they need a positive explanation to why things are done a certain way to keep up their morale and not feel that their idea went unheard when in fact they may just not have the full understanding of a larger picture, or when an employee has an idea that is great and perhaps been missed by everyone else, bring that idea further up for possible implementation or changes to procedures.
  • Execute purchases as per the new “P.O.” process

Department Duties:

Management of the Maintenance Department which includes efficient operations in relation to:

  • Operations of mechanical systems
  • Execution of filed Work Orders (work orders are filed by various departments for repair needs)
  • Landscaping & Snow Removal
  • Maintaining neat and orderly grounds at all times
  • Firewood management
  • Resort Attendant tasks
  • Garbage and waste management
  • All property management needs for the condo associations at the resort
  • Full and proper billing and reporting for times and materials
  • Routine checklists for “good working order or excellent condition” of all infrastructure at the resort from lighting to heating, from railings to potholes.

Reporting Structure:

  • This position reports directly to the Facilities and Housekeeping Director on a daily basis
  • Additional reporting to the President & CEO
  • The positions has an assistant management position that reports directly along with the maintenance team
  • Peer Reporting Structure with several departments

Required Skills and Attributes:

The successful candidate will show traits of a strong work ethic and have a sincere interest in the hospitality industry, and most importantly, have a desire to be in this industry to create great guest experiences. The successful candidate will also be an excellent problem solver, have strong communication skills and demonstrate quality leadership. The Director of Facilities will also show an very high attention to detail and take pride in the smooth mechanical operations of all the resort infrastructure. Further, the successful candidate will be able to handle stressful situations in a positive and forward motion; with many moving pieces, things go wrong all the time, and the leader of the department will be able to manage those situations quickly and without fluster.

Preferred Experience & Education:

  • At least 5 years experience in a similar management role
  • Education in the trades a strong asset
  • Experience in hospitality a strong asset
  • Successful candidate will be required to have various certifications, a list of all current certifications a strong asset

Compensation:

$20-$24 hourly based on experience and credentials
