JOB SUMMARY:

The most essential role of the Residential Direct Support Professional (RDSP) is to provide the best life possible for individuals with Intellectual/Developmental disorder and individuals that are dually diagnosed with S.M.I. To provide skill building and support to promote maximum independence for each individual providing guidance and safety support in all areas ensuring that they are active and valued members of their community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide support for medical needs which includes scheduling and accompany individuals for all routine well and sick-care appointments, help the individual to explain their symptoms when sick and to understand and follow doctor's orders. Residential Direct Support Professionals (RDSPs) assume the responsibility for following all doctors order in providing care for individuals in service.
  • All RDSPs levels are responsible to maintain current certification in First Aid/CPR/AED. Provide input into and/or actively develop a person-centered service plan to support individuals served in the community. DSP IIs and IIIs are required to successfully complete the Board of Nursing approved 40-hour initial medication class and maintain an annual recertification. Additionally, DSP IIs and IIIs may be required to complete specialty training in areas of; Gastrostomy Tubes, Insulin, etc., as appropriate to the individuals residing in the home. Moreover, RDSP IIs and IIIs are responsible to administer medications as prescribed and monitor for any potential side-effects, reporting observed information to the prescribing physician.
  • Appropriately intervene in crisis situations and emergencies and make referrals to and seek consultation from other sources as needed. Provide a safe home environment and complete required emergency drills as required by licensing and/or other governing entities.
  • Provide the best life possible for all individuals served in each aspect of their lives by providing skill buildings and support to promote maximum independence for each individual according to their specific needs and in accordance with their Person Centered Plan.
  • Provide opportunities for each individual to explore integrative activities that are familiar as well as providing new experiences to expand their knowledge of the world in which they live promoting their development of relationships and natural supports. Provide transportation, secure funds, and facilitating positive communication by teaching skills to further their independence and to provide safety supports.
  • Maintain all required trainings are completed within compliance with agency policy. RDSPs are responsible for accurate, informative documentation reflecting the services and supports delivered to the individuals served. Attend scheduled meetings, assessments, and provide information that informs the development of plans for the individuals served.
  • RDSPs must be able to work independently and as part of a team to actively participate in daily activities to provide a loving, supportive home environment for the individuals served. RDSPs must be able to work without direct supervision.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Upon hire, staff are assigned a home location within the division and assigned a supervisor. However, staff may be required to work at other group homes if coverage is warranted and at the discretion of the Group Home Coordinator or Division Director.
  • Direct Care Staff are subject to working varying shifts which include but are not limited to holidays, weekends, and overnights. Shifts will be determined by the need of specific locations and may vary at times.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of Developmental Disabilities and related conditions.
  • Good oral communication and computer skills.
  • Ability to interact with people in a supportive and therapeutic manner.
  • Willing to work flexible hours including overnight, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to work independently and with supervision.
  • Criminal background and DSS registry check required.
  • Valid Driver's license (U.S. issued) and a copy of DMV safe driving record.
Minimum Requirements

RDSP II: High School diploma or equivalency with certification as a Medication Aide within 90 days of hire.

Mount Rogers Community Services, in following current CMS regulations, requires all New Hires to be Fully Vaccinated against COVID 19 or have a religious or medical exemption approved no later than the date of employment.
