Job Summary

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) seeks to hire a candidate for a Research Scientist-3 position directed toward research in atmospheric aerosol remote sensing, with emphasis on wildfire smoke, volcanic aerosol, and global aerosol climatology. The candidate will work with existing data sets from NASA and NOAA satellites, airborne and ground-based sensors and collaborate in developing future mission concepts and methods of analyses and interpretation.

LASP at the University of Colorado Boulder is one of the largest research institutes at the University of Colorado Boulder. With a focus on solar, stellar, space plasma, atmospheric and planetary sciences, LASP employs both experimental and theoretical approaches to answer key science questions. Since its inception in 1948, LASP has developed, operated, and analyzed the data from scientific instrumentation for solar science, Earth atmospheric, planetary, deep-space, and Earth-orbiting spacecraft missions investigating the Sun, all eight planets, Pluto, and beyond. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Work closely with LASP scientists and students on collaborative projects examining remote sensing data.
  • Work with LASP scientists and engineers developing new concepts for future aerosol and cloud remote sensing missions and participate in applications for funding opportunities.
  • Have a high level of interaction within the national, international and multicultural scientific community.
  • Provide mentorship for junior scientists and students.
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present papers at national and international symposia.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this full-time position is $123,500 - $215,000 annually.

What We Require

  • PhD in Physics, Earth, Atmospheric or Planetary Science, or a closely related field.

What You Will Need

  • Twenty years or more experience conducting research on the Earth-atmosphere system using NASA satellite, airborne and ground-based measurements directed toward aerosol and cloud remote sensing. Preference will be given to candidates with PI leadership experience, with experience developing global aerosol climatologies, and in research related to smoke and volcanic aerosol.
  • Proven Principal Investigator capabilities.
  • Knowledge of atmospheric processes.
  • Knowledge of atmospheric remote sensing.
  • Knowledge of atmospheric radiative transfer.
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills (both technical and non-technical).
  • Knowledge of NASA’s Earth Sciences Program.
