Department & Position Summary


Reporting to the Vice President for Research and Business Engagement (VPRBE) and very strong collaboration with the University Compliance Officer, the Research Compliance Officer will develop, oversee, enforce, and maintain a comprehensive research compliance program for the University of Akron.


Responsibilities


Work very closely with University Legal Counsel, Chief Compliance and Risk Officer and other University departments as needed to develop and implement policies, processes, and guidance to maintain institutional compliance with diverse governmental regulations related to research including: research involving human and animal subjects, Biosafety, Export Control, Controlled Unclassified Information, Conflicts of Interest and Commitment, Foreign Influence in University Research, Responsible Conduct of Research, Data Management and Sharing plans, and other regulatory compliance requirements that may arise over time.

Develop and implement compliance training programs for faculty, staff, and student researchers.

Assist with allegations of suspected research noncompliance in conjunction with other University offices, including the VPRBE and Legal Counsel.

Serve as Alternate Facility Security Officer for the University.


Required Qualifications


Terminal degree is required (PhD., JD, DVM, etc.).

Must be eligible for employment in areas governed by the US Patriot Act and the Public Health and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002. Must successfully complete a Department of Justice/Federal Bureau of Investigation security risk assessment background check.

Requires a minimum of at least 5 years of progressively more responsible work experience in research administration and management and research contract negotiations.

Excellent knowledge and interpretation of complex federal regulations and ability to translate regulatory requirements into practical and useful guidance for researchers.

Ability to communicate and work effectively with the University community, other universities, federal agencies and other regulatory authorities, and project sponsors.

Must be detail oriented with a high degree of accuracy, and excellent project management skills.

Must possess a high degree of integrity, initiative, and the ability to work independently and handle sensitive and confidential information.

The compensation for this position is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
