LOCATION: This position will be based out of one of our offices in Norfolk, Richmond or Northern Virginia (Chantilly). (1 position in one of 3 locations)


Description:

The Research Associate will conduct industry, corporate, real estate, political and policy research and analysis to support local power building to win racial, gender, and economic justice in working class communities of color in Northern Virginia, Richmond / Central Virginia and Hampton Roads.

The Research Associate will support our local work in Richmond, Norfolk, Loudoun, Fairfax, and Prince William counties and nearby areas where we have local organizing efforts.


Core Responsibilities will include:

  • Reports to the Organizing Director and work closely with locally based organizers and community members to identify research needs related to active campaigns.
  • Use a wide variety of sources, including published databases, on-line and Internet sources to design and support local campaigns.
  • Research may include analyzing local government policies and practices and developing alternatives to address community needs and demands. Developing resources and materials to support analysis of proposals and arguments regarding New Virginia Majority’s local policy priorities.
  • Monitoring local and state policy developments, key committees, and relevant administrative and regulatory actions.


Qualifications include:


  • Committed to New Virginia Majority’s mission of social, racial and economic justice.
  • Relevant research and/or organizing experience (labor, political, urban planning, community or campus
  • Strong analytical, writing, computer and interpersonal/organizing skills
  • Willingness to work out of a regional office in Virginia and be able to travel to Hampton Roads, Richmond and / or Northern Virginia to meet and work with local members and organizers. Familiarity with database and word processing software
  • Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines; able to develop and move projects forward with independence and autonomy.
  • Self-motivated and works well both independently and on a team.
  • Ability to effectively manage a workload with competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to take direction and constructive feedback.
  • Preferred -ability to communicate in Spanish.
  • Reliable car and driver’s license

Compensation and Benefits:

Annual salary $45,000 to $51,000 commensurate with experience, and comes with an excellent benefits package.
