What We Want
The Research Assistant will contribute to ongoing research to understand the molecular mechanism of circadian and seasonal rhythms in monarch butterflies. Under the direction of the principal investigator, the individual will focus their efforts on ordering, general lab organization, and maintaining monarch mutant lines. The individual is also expected to be engaged and participate in scientific activities, including molecular cloning, the generation of new CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutants, cell culture, and etc. as needed. Required Education and Experience:
  • Appropriate bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of laboratory maintenance and equipment
  • Knowledge of computers and computer software related to the position
  • Willingness to work with monarch butterflies
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills required
  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in biology or a field related to the research with a minimum of 1 year of practical experience in laboratory research
  • Proficiency in basic lab techniques and principles of molecular biology
Responsibilities
  • Research Experiments: Assists lab members with experiments in molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell culture. This includes, but is not limited to, performing genomic and RNA extraction, RT-PCR, gel electrophoresis, in vitro transcription, Cas9-cleavage assays, and egg microinjections. Analyzes experimental results and troubleshoots methods to improve research protocols. Maintains organized records and documentation of all experimental procedures. Evaluates, summarizes, and reports results to the principal investigator in oral and written form.
  • Animal Husbandry: Maintains butterflies colony including raising, breeding, and genotyping mutant lines.
  • Lab Maintenance: Orders and manages inventory of lab consumables in compliance with lab and safety guidelines. Prepares stocks of common buffers and reagents. Autoclaves consumables for communal use. Maintains laboratory equipment and monitors levels/packaging biological waste for disposal, as well as performing other duties as assigned.
