This position provides comprehensive public health services in the area of disease intervention as well as providing education and technical assistance to clients, communities, and health care providers on public health, disease transmission, disease prevention, and healthy lifestyles. This position will work with cases of vaccine-preventable diseases, HIV, sexually transmissible diseases, tuberculosis, bioterrorism events, emerging diseases, and other infectious diseases. This position will aid in the testing and treatment of clients, as well as provide many other case management services. This full-time position will require occasional travel both in-state and out-of-state.

Licenses and Certifications:
Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) with the State of South Dakota.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
The Department of Health is seeking a registered nurse with clinical experience and knowledge of public health is preferred.

Knowledge of:

  • health care protocols;
  • basic computer skills;
  • nursing case management;
  • ethical and professional conduct;
  • privacy practices and reporting procedures; and
  • clinical or laboratory policies and procedures.

  • effectively participate in groups; and
  • develop alternatives to solve problems and streamline procedures.

Ability to:

  • plan and prepare for case and field work;
  • independently conduct infectious disease investigations;
  • lead client encounters and conduct interviews;
  • conduct surveillance activities;
  • collaborate with health systems and facilitate improvement in the quality of care;
  • provide clinical follow-up;
  • conduct field services and testing;
  • conduct case analysis; and
  • respond to outbreaks and assist with emergency preparedness activities.
