GENERAL PURPOSE


Performs routine clerical work in performing specialized clerical and technical functions relating to securing, storing, processing and disposing of property and evidence, answering phones, receiving the public, providing customer assistance in the police department, and transcribing taped statements.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED


Works under the close supervision of the Deputy Chief of Police or designee.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Receiving, processing, and storing evidence and property.


Maintains evidence in a secure manner.


Maintains detailed computerized and manual records systems on evidence and property.


Purges evidence and recovered property in accordance with applicable laws; obtains court orders for destruction or auctioning of unclaimed or illegal property.


Evaluates submitted property and evidence to assure items have been correctly and adequately packaged and marked according to state law and police department policies.


Assists with periodic property and evidence audits.


Transcribes taped statements.


Provides public services such as lost and found, stolen and recovered property.


Receives the public and answers questions; responds to inquiries from employees, citizens and others and refers, when necessary, to appropriate persons.


Operates office equipment as required.


Compose, type, and edit correspondence, reports, memoranda, and other material requiring judgment as to content, accuracy, and completeness.


Train employees in evidence handling procedures.


Testify in court with regards to security and custody of evidence and prepare court-related documents.


Develops and maintains office forms and procedures.


Orders departmental supplies and materials.


PERIPHERAL DUTIES


Serves on various employee or other committees as assigned.


Provides backup to related positions.


Other duties as required.


DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


Education and Experience:


(A) High school diploma or GED equivalent; with specialized course work in general office practices such as typing, and filing.

(B) Two (2) years of increasingly responsible related experience, or any equivalent combination of related education and experience.


Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


(A) Knowledge of computers and electronic data processing; working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.

  • Skilled in the operation of vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to effectively meet and deal courteously with the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations.
  • Ability to organize data, files, and uses computers to complete reports and retrieve case information.
  • General knowledge of the laws and practices governing the storage and control of evidence.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with associates.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS


Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of Florida.

Phone; mainframe computer terminal; personal computer; copy machine; postage machine; fax machine; police radio; 10-key calculator.
