Summary

The Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR) is the home of the University of Michigan?s Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Institutes of Health. MICHR is part of a national, collaborative consortium that is focused on bringing more treatments to all patients more quickly by advancing clinical and translational science (CTS). The field of CTS aims to build an evidence base of scientific and operational approaches that improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and impact of translational research across a range of diseases and conditions. MICHR has the unique charge of examining the translational research ecosystem at a systems level to determine where common pitfalls exist; developing novel solutions to these challenges; demonstrating their effectiveness; and disseminating improvements widely. MICHR is a dynamic organization that serves as a hub of innovation and experimentation to advance research in the science of translation and accelerate the realization of interventions that improve human health.

MICHR is seeking an experienced, administrative professional to serve as a Promoting Academic and Community Engagement (PACE) Program Officer for the Community Engagement (CE) Program which is a singular unit within the Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR). The CE program supports and encourages research approaches that engage both community and academic partners.

Responsibilities*

Community-Engaged Research (CEnR) Training Efforts

• Work with the UM Partners and PACE Steering Committee (SC) to implement and evaluate community-based participatory research PACE Trainings.
• Lead the effort in collaboration with CE Team and the PACE SC to create PACE Training Manual to share sharing CEnR stories, successes, and practices to identify new knowledge, advocate for implementation of evidence-based practices, and guide decision-making for continued responsiveness to community-identified challenges.
• Lead the effort in collaboration with CE Team and the PACE Steering Committee (SC) to create and disseminate PACE ScienCE Webinars and Toolkits that demystify for community partners topics such as the research grant application process, invoicing, subcontracting, indirect cost rates, and managing conflicts of interest, and that clarify for academics the payment processes that are supportive of community partners.
• Lead the effort in collaboration with a MICHR cross-core team and others at U-M to design, implement, and evaluate the CEnR FastForward curriculum.

Pilot Grants

• Manage the PACE Dissemination grant mechanism including development of RFAs, review process, funding communication, monthly communication with funded projects, and progress reporting.
• Work with MICHR Finance Team for budgetary requirements of PACE Dissemination funded projects.
• Work with other members of the CE Team, to share PACE Success Stories of PACE Dissemination grant awardees.
• Manage the CE scientific reviewers for all mechanisms.
• Support the community and patient reviewers on the MICHR Pilot Grant Program.
• Develop metrics for all CE pilots in order to measure the impact in translational science.

General Support

• Connects to a variety of community-based organizations (CBO), understand the health priorities of partner organizations, policymakers, and members of the community, and regularly participate in at least one local community-based coalition or group.
• Encourages CBOs to engage in new research opportunities as they arise, often in response to new funding opportunities, and to utilize MICHR services when appropriate.
• Provide reporting language and metrics for UM and federal reporting requirements.
• Writes for academic and community contexts working collaboratively to develop manuscripts, abstracts, and other dissemination materials.

Required Qualifications*

• Master's degree or Bachelor's degree with equivalent experience required in a relevant field
• 5-7 years of experience with community engaged, community-based and community based participatory research; facilitating/convening processes, and community based/community-university multidisciplinary partnerships.
• 5-7 years of experience implementing and evaluating funding mechanisms to support community-engaged research
• 5-7 years of experience with developing and implementing training for community and academic partners around community-engaged research
• Strong writing and interpersonal communication skills.
• Strong initiative and demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaborative settings is essential.
• Familiarity with broader impacts/societal impacts/community engagement and the importance of DEIA to the research community.

Desired Qualifications*

• Ph.D. or other advanced degree
• Demonstrates strengths in networking and relationship building, knowledge of consensus decision-making processes, and understanding of the specific cultural context in their respective community environments.
• Demonstrates involvement in community-based work in their community or areas of focus and are able to offer insight into the barriers that separate the scientific community from the public.

Background Screening
