Requirements (Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification):
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering
  • zero (0) to three (3) years of experience in the application of the principles and methods of Civil Engineering
  • must be Engineer in Training (EIT)
  • Valid Driver’s License issued by the state of residency
  • Upon hire, incumbents in the position must be able to obtain registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio within four (4) years.

Job Duties (Summary):
  • Directs the establishment and administration of special projects (e.g., drainage systems for subdivisions, condominiums, industrial parks, shopping centers, apartment projects, multiple building sites, etc.); performs land and construction surveys; reviews and approves Civil engineering plans; reviews developmental plans, engineering plans, specifications, contracts and reports submitted by contractors; ensures compliance with state and county codes; meets with contractors, architects and others to discuss plans, identify problems and formulate corrective action; reviews contracts; ensures compliance with department codes and regulations, specifications and civil engineering principles; coordinates construction projects; confers with Field Operations Superintendent to discuss work projects, priorities, problems encountered, work schedules and other related matters; inspects projects in progress, identifies problems and recommends corrective action; serves as departmental representative in public meetings.
  • Acts as lead worker for Project Inspector 2 and other assigned staff in performance of duties (e.g., schedules, assigns and reviews work, ensures work is completed according to quality standards, assists employees in performance of difficult assignments, trains new employees,).
  • Reviews preliminary engineering plans for the Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission, private engineers and developers; reviews contracts; ensures compliance with department codes and regulations, specifications and engineering principles.
  • Travels to and gains access to field work sites to perform surveys, storm drainage analyses and structure analyses; compiles information for drainage studies and reports (e.g., detention and retention of ponds, lakes, reservoirs, flood plains, etc.); makes recommendations to alleviate existing or prevent potential drainage problems; investigates complaints filed by private citizens.
  • Assists Division managers in managing operations; assigns tasks; evaluates performance; interviews job applicants; administers discipline; provides input into development of departmental policies, budget, etc.; assumes responsibility for department in absence of the manager.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
  • Prepares specification, plans and contracts for renovations (e.g., parking lots, building demolitions, Courthouse renovations, storm sewer projects, etc.); prepares bid documents and cost estimates.
  • Participates in the development and modification of department regulations; prepares reports regarding flood damage prevention, landslides, building permit reviews, downspouts, storm drainage system revisions, etc.
  • Maintains records and other documentation reflecting review dates, transmittal dates and other various engineering data; assists co-workers with performance of duties as required or assigned.
