Job Description


Mission Contribution:
To provide a safe and enriching environment for young adults with disabilities and respite to caregivers.


Function:
Assist with the daily operations of Kaleidoscope, a recreation and leisure program serving young adults with developmental disabilities.


Essential Functions:
(must be able to perform these functions, with or without a reasonable accommodation).

  • Assists with the implementation of program activities related to the growth and development of young adults with developmental disabilities in the areas of self-sufficiency, leisure, educational skills, employment readiness, leadership skills and character development.
  • Makes sure that all participants are adequately engaged and involved in activities driven by the participant’s individual needs and goals.
  • Participate in the research of and development of activities that will enhance the quality of life and interest of young adults with disabilities.
  • Provides supervision and positive interactions with participants throughout the day actively promoting respect, acceptance and encouragement, using positive behavior intervention techniques to modify inappropriate behavior when necessary.
  • Assist with obtaining and distributing lunches and snacks.
  • Make sure that company equipment and supplies are handled responsibly and report any problems to supervisor.
  • Assists with daily cleaning duties in the program area (including regular sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, disinfecting tables, chairs, washing dishes, utensils, and emptying trash). Completes other cleaning duties as assigned.
  • Accompany and supervise participants while actively participating in field trips making sure that all participants are safe, engaged in activities and accounted for.
  • May assist participants with activities of daily living (ADL’s) including eating, toileting, hygiene and ambulation.
  • Participate in special events including fundraisers, holiday events or public awareness opportunities along side participants.
  • Makes sure that participant information is kept confidential and that records are secured at all times.
  • Communicates regularly with supervisor regarding participant or program progress and other issues.
  • Stays current on special population issues by participating in on-going training and professional development opportunities including seminars, conferences, in-house training and through personal research.
  • Stays informed of community, agency, and program information through inter-office communications, and attendance at staff meetings.
  • Acts as a positive and professional role model when representing Goodwill.
  • Regular attendance and adherence to scheduled hours, as outlined in Goodwill’s policy, is required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills, knowledge and abilities: (these are required to enable job holder to perform the essential functions of the job).

  • Must be knowledgeable about how to interact with people with all types of disabilities and to maximize their potential for self-sufficiency.
  • Must be able to interact cordially and productively with a variety of people.
  • Must be able to market Goodwill and explain the mission to the general public.
  • Must possess good organizational and time management skills.
  • Must be able to take initiative, make decisions and work well with little supervision.
  • Must be able to keep information confidential.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have good computer skills and be able to utilize Microsoft Office software and Outlook.
  • Must be able to maintain an effective working relationship with, and among employees and trainees (or participants), while motivating them to their best performance.
  • Ability to function in a hectic work environment with occasional periods of high stress.


Qualifications
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Minimum of two years experience working with and/or training people with disabilities.

Part-time position - up to 29 hours per week. $13.00/hour
