Postdoctoral Research Scholar Position for a project on “Machine Learning for Multi-scale simulations of High-Speed Multi-material Flows”

IIHR – Hydroscience & Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Iowa seek a highly motivated postdoctoral research scholar to join Dr. H. S. Udaykumar’s research group (https://www.iihr.uiowa.edu/blog/people/udaykumar-h-s/ (https://www.iihr.uiowa.edu/blog/people/udaykumar-h-s/)).


The initial appointment is full-time for two years, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and continued funding. The successful candidate will conduct research using high-fidelity computer simulations of fluid and solid mechanics including reactive mechanics and materials under extreme conditions, multi-scale modeling, machine learning and verification and validation.

The research project involves interactions with other university groups across the US and liaisons will be established with DoE labs (Los Alamos and Livermore National Labs) and Air Force Labs. These positions may involve summer internships and strong potential for future employment at these prestigious labs.

This position is available Spring 2023 and the start date is relatively flexible. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Education Requirement:

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering , physics, or applied mathematics, or closely related fields is required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in computational modeling is required.
  • Expertise in programming in Fortan/C/C++/Python is required.
  • A strong mathematical and computational background is required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a research environment are required.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience using high performance computing resources (parallel computing systems) is desirable.
