The Fernley Swimming Pool, located in Fernley Nevada, is currently accepting applications for a full-time, non-exempt, Pool Supervisor. The primary function of this position is to manage swimming pool services to ensure the safety of patrons by directing lifeguard staff, overseeing pool operations, and maintaining pool water balance.

Required Certifications, Licenses, Experience, and Training

Candidates should possess or be able to acquire the following certifications within the first six months of hire:

  • Current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard.
  • Current certification in American Red Cross CPR / First Aid / AED.

Candidates should possess or be able to acquire the following certifications within two years of hire:

  • PHTA Certified Pool Operator Certification

Salary Range:

  • $21.39 - $24.80 (Employee/Employer Paid Retirement)
  • $18.50 - $21.45 (Employer Paid Retirement)

Summary of Job Purpose: Under limited supervision of the Facility Director, ensures the safety of patrons of the Fernley Swimming Pool by preventing and responding to emergencies through the correct assignment and direction of lifeguard staff, and performs all other work as assigned. Pool Supervisors are expected to perform the primary chemical checking and balancing as needed.

Essential Functions: The duties listed below are examples of work typically performed by employees in these positions. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties which are not listed below.

  • Ensures the safety of patrons by overseeing lifeguard services and enforcing pool rules and regulations in a polite and assertive manner.
  • Monitors and maintains proper pool sanitation and chemical balance.
  • Monitors the activities in the facility and surrounding area.
  • Factually document and report all incidents.
  • Interacts with the public on a regular basis in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Directs staff with cleaning, sanitation, and maintenance of the facility.
  • Supervises office duties, including answering phone calls and collecting fees.
  • Maintains proper physical and mental fitness to properly respond to emergencies.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to learn and perform essential functions satisfactorily. Knowledge of:

  • Reading, writing, basic math, and verbal communication skills.
  • American Red Cross lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid techniques.
  • Occupational safety standards.
  • General recreation principles and practices, including aquatics practices and customer service.
  • Swimming pool health, safety, and maintenance principles and practice.
  • Swimming Pool mechanical and chemical systems.

Ability to:

  • Recognize and react calmly and effectively to emergency situations using American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid technique and skills.
  • Understand and implement verbal and written instructions.
  • Assist customers in a courteous and helpful manner.
  • Enforce established policy and procedure.
  • Exhibit continued swimming proficiency and endurance.
  • Provide clear instruction and guidance to staff.
  • Motivate and review staff performance.

Certifications, Licenses, and Training

Candidates should possess or be able to acquire the following certifications within two years of hire:

Education or Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities required in the essential duties;

  • High School Diploma or GED supplemented by college level course work in recreations, public administration, business administration, or a related field, or
  • Two years of increasing responsibility experience directing and overseeing recreation programs, event operations, public administration, or business administration, or
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements: Shift work, split shifts, rotating work schedule, weekdays, weekend, holiday, and overtime work may be required.

Physical and Mental Requirements: The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential function of this job.

Employees must have the strength, stamina, and coordination to frequently swim, walk, sit, bend, stoop, andstand for long periods of time. Regular use of hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. Occasional climbing or balancing. Occasional lifting and/or moving of 50 pounds or more with assistance and proper training. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.

Employees must have the ability to appropriately handle stress and interact with others including, supervisors, coworkers, members of the public, and others during emergency and non-emergency situations.

Working Conditions: Work environment includes exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and outside environments including hot and cold temperatures, wind, and direct sunlight. Possible exposure to hazardous conditions, including toxic or caustic chemicals. Noise levels may fluctuate from moderate to extreme. Frequent contact with members of the public, periodic contact with angry and upset individuals, and physical/personal contact with others.
