Expected Hiring Range: $80,000 - $95,000 DOE/Q

Full Salary Range: $80,000 - $120,000


The Town of Vail is hiring a Plans Examiner to facilitate the coordination of the plan review process. This will include reviewing permit applications, construction drawings and technical documents for completeness and code compliance. This position may also perform inspections of residential and commercial buildings, as needed. The Plans Examiner is considered essential and ensures the health and general welfare of the citizens and visitors of Vail is maintained through the administration of adopted codes and standards.


This position provides opportunities for growth and development within the municipal building and planning industry. The Town of Vail Community Development department is a fast-paced environment, providing exposure to different types of construction and challenges. Partial remote work may be a possibility with this position and can be discussed with potential candidates.


  • Performs commercial and residential plan reviews to verify that drawings for new construction, renovations, alterations, additions, and repairs are code compliant.
  • Ensures that all new construction and alterations meet minimum life safety requirements for accessibility, emergency egress, fire resistance and protection, structural soundness, and air quality.
  • Interprets the building codes adopted by the town to ensure intent and compliance are met.
  • Assists the public at the Community Development counter, on the phone, and through electronic communication to provide pertinent information and facilitate the permitting, plan review and inspection processes.
  • May perform building, plumbing, mechanical and related inspections of commercial and residential construction projects to ensure code compliance, as needed.
  • Reviews quality of materials and methods of construction; maintains records of plan reviews and inspections; answers inquiries and technical questions concerning code compliance, interpretation and inspection techniques.
  • Supports the team-driven concepts of the division and department and willingly participates in team functions, meetings and activities.
  • Serves the citizens and guests of the Town of Vail by abiding by all Town of Vail core values.
  • Perform job in accordance with all Town of Vail safety practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of building construction, project management and code compliance methods and practices, including a working knowledge of construction techniques, materials, means and methods.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing including the use of electronic mail, and the ability to prepare and present documents pertaining to construction and code related issues.
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings and highly technical documents relating to building codes, construction specifications, and standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills that include the ability to be team-oriented, establish effective working relationships and display exemplary customer service skills.
  • Ability to apply complex thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems and to deal with difficult concepts or situations.
  • Thorough working knowledge of the International Code Council code editions and the adopted Town of Vail ordinances and regulations.
  • In-depth understanding of permit and review processes and procedures and the use of electronic permitting and plan review software.

Education, Experience and Certificates

  • High school diploma and five (5) years’ experience in code enforcement/compliance/administration, construction, project management, or a closely related technical field.
  • Certification as Building Plans Examiner and Residential Plans Examiner through the International Code Council is required.
  • Certification in three (3) additional plans examination/inspection disciplines through the International Code Council is required to be obtain within 18 months of hire.
  • Five (5) or more years’ experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, technical specifications and building codes and standards documents.
  • Hold and maintain a valid CO driver’s license.
