The Pharmacy Technician is an entry-level position. Following a training period, the Technician should be able to decipher and enter orders on the computer, compound IVs, charge and credit, fill orders, answer phones and doors, and stock the department.

  • Runs reports, pulls medications and restocks Automated Dispensing Machines, follows up on narcotic discrepancies, trouble-shoots problems, aides and trains nurses on dispensing problems.
  • Compounds IV and piggyback medications, using aseptic technique and universal precautions. Follows USP 797 guidelines.
  • Run labels using the computer in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Fills, reconciles and exchanges 24 hour UD medicine carts using McKesson robot and Cerner.
  • Repackages non-unit dose medications correctly using PacMed and McKesson repackager.
  • Replaces and fills floor stock: fills EMS boxes, crash cart trays, open heart meds and Omnicell Anesthesia carts and delivers to appropriate area; completes monthly floor stock on other hospital departments; stocks UD area and IV room if needed.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Compounds oral and topical solutions and ointments.

Answers phone, retrieves tubes and faxes.

Helps with duties as directed by the pharmacist on duty.

Able to add barcodes to products, including compounded items, IVPB’s, etc using the MILT 3.0 program, and using PharmNet Inpatient Formulary Manager to check NDC numbers and barcodes.

Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

Pharmacy Technician Licensure required - New hires and transfers before October 1, 2015 must possess a full technician license through the State of Michigan or show proof that they have applied. Incumbents before October 1, 2015 must possess the CPhT – National Certification for pharmacy technicians. Effective October 1, 2015, all incumbents, new hires and transfers to this position must possess a pharmacy technician full license through the state of Michigan. The pharmacy technician license must be maintained in order to be qualified to hold this position.

High School Diploma or GED required.

Successful completion of annual exam for Aseptic Technique within 90 days of hire and annually thereafter required.

Computer experience required.

Good math skills (pass a standard test), good organizational skills, a team player and ability to work under high pressure and time constraints are all required.

Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

Medical Terminology knowledge preferred.

Hospital or Retail Pharmacy experience preferred.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time.

May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood-borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.

Must follow MyMichigan Health blood-borne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling.

May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
