Performs difficult skilled and technical work overseeing the maintenance of the parks, grounds areas, facilities, and equipment of the County. Does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision. Supervision is exercised over assigned maintenance personnel.

The hourly salary for this position is $21.21.

The full salary range for this position is $21.21 to $36.06 hourly to provide opportunity for growth and development.

Planning, organizing and supervising crews involved in park maintenance activities; ensuring that proper supplies and equipment are available; preparing and maintaining records and files.

• Plans, organizes, directs, and inspects the work of crews engaged in the regular maintenance of parks and grounds areas, facilities, and equipment including snow removal;
• Inspects areas and facilities for conformance to maintenance and safety standards;
• Performs skilled repair and maintenance duties on pool pumps and filtration systems;
• Repairs and maintains vehicles and equipment;
• Requisitions necessary equipment and materials;
• Supervises the work of grounds crews and trains new employees;
• Prepares and maintains electronic records and reports on division activities and equipment maintenance;
• Inputs and completes electronic work orders;
• Conducts regular field inspections of each managed location;
• Completes inspection reports and provides monthly and annual reports to the Parks and Recreation Commission and Superintendent;
• Assists supervisor and implements specific turfgrass management programs for individual locations;
• Prepares studies on soil analysis for turfgrass management, weed and pest control;
• Recommends specific varieties of grasses and applications of fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides or pesticides for new park facility specifications;
• Contact for local, state, national agencies, and local and state universities for turfgrass related problems;
• Recommends preferred specifications for capital equipment, operating materials, and supplies involved with turfgrass management and maintenance;
• Provides liaison with other County departments on related activities;
• Performs related tasks as required.

• Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment, tools, and materials used in park maintenance;
• General knowledge of general building, equipment, repair, and maintenance;
• Thorough knowledge of the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners;
• Thorough knowledge of herbicides and pest control methods and materials, and the ability to apply it;
• Knowledge of drainage control methods;
• Knowledge of watering and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps, and automatic controls;
• Ability to identify turfgrass diseases and/or deficiencies and take corrective action;
• Ability to accurately assess site conditions and recommend turfgrass management/maintenance requirements;
• Thorough knowledge of hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in maintenance work;
• Ability to plan and supervise the work of assigned personnel;
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
• Ability to prepare electronic reports and maintain records.

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school diploma and three (3) to five (5) years of experience in a supervisory capacity in buildings, grounds maintenance, and turfgrass management work; experience in building systems, plumbing, electrical, and road work is also desired.

Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Possession of a pool operator, pesticide applicator, and fertilizer applicator license.
