Description
Incumbent serves as Gatekeeper for the Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department, responsible for collecting fees and providing information to park visitors.

Examples of Duties
  • Collects appropriate park and/or camp fees, including providing receipt, and completing necessary paperwork required by State Board of Accounts.
  • Provides information regarding Vigo County Parks and Recreation rules and regulations to campers and park visitors.
  • Answers Park telephone, taking messages, and providing information as needed, or refers caller to Park office when appropriate.
  • Provides public relations to Park campers and visitors, including providing directions, maps and/or pamphlets of Park area.
  • Maintains safety, including reporting any unsafe conditions affecting public and/or staff, and reports unusual or suspicious behavior as required, problems that need attention, and completing incident report and submitting as required.
  • Maintains cleanliness of assigned areas, including sweeping and removing trash. Assists with directing traffic as needed.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to meet all employer and department hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department practices, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepared detailed reports, such as activity and incident reports
  • Knowledge of basic bookkeeping practices and ability to perform arithmetic calculations to receive and receipt monies.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, Park patrons, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
  • Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
  • Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to State requirements.
  • Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written and oral instructions present findings in oral or written form.
  • Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to work on several tasks at the same time and work rapidly for long periods, occasionally under time pressure.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of people and/or locations. Ability to work weekends and/or evening hours.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and a demonstrated safe driving record.

Supplemental Information
Incumbent performs duties according to seasonal deadlines, with assignments guided by definite objectives using a variety of methods or procedures. Incumbent receives indirect or occasional supervision with moderate flexibility in the job. Errors in work are primarily detected or prevented through supervisory review and notification from the public.
Incumbent reports directly to the Maintenance Specialist.
Incumbent’s duties require sitting/walking at will, sitting/standing/walking for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing 25-50 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, bending, reaching, close/far vision, color perception, handling/grasping objects, speaking clearly and hearing sounds/communication.
Incumbent performs duties outdoors and/or in a gate house with frequent exposure to normal hazards associated with working outdoors, such as inclement weather and extreme temperatures, working with or near chemicals, near fumes, odors, dust and dirt, in confined areas, and may be exposed to irate difficult persons. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self or others.
Incumbent works weekends and/or evening hours.
