CURRENT HOURLY RANGE - $26.21 TO $32.79, 40-HOUR PER WEEK SCHEDULE, NON-AFFILIATED POSITION

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision of the Park Maintenance Supervisor, incumbent performs very responsible parks maintenance work involving the performance of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of public grounds, athletic fields, swimming facilities, cemeteries, landscaped areas, and recreation facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Uses hand and light power tools to mow grass, maintain athletic fields, clear snow, dig soil, clear brush, groom landscaped areas, remove leaves and debris, pick up trash, install signs, complete basic carpentry, and perform related parks maintenance work that requires proficiency in a wide variety of the Department’s core maintenance functions.
  • Operates park maintenance machinery and equipment such as tractors, mowers, dump trucks, chain saws and various power tools.
  • Moves bleachers, benches, park and playground equipment and other heavy objects.
  • Follows guidance and instructions as communicated in Safety Data Sheets and labels, fertilizer and chemical bags, memos, directions, operator manuals, and training materials.
  • Performs basic inspection and preventive maintenance of all tools, equipment and materials prior to use.
  • Completes job forms and maintains routine department records.
  • Assists higher level maintainers in skilled maintenance tasks. Performs work of lower level classifications as assigned.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • May supervise a small number of seasonal workers and oversees lower level classifications as assigned.
  • May perform skilled tasks upon qualification as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE:

  • Knowledge of the tools, equipment and methods of grounds and equipment maintenance
  • Ability to drive a pickup truck, truck hauling a trailer, and operate a truck with a snow plow
  • Knowledge of the work standards and safety procedures in parks and grounds maintenance
  • Skilled in the use of hand tools and power equipment in grounds and facility maintenance
  • Ability to relate positively to staff members and the general public
  • Ability to read and write English
  • Ability to work overtime and be available for emergencies before and after scheduled work hours
  • Knowledge of state traffic laws
  • Ability to fill out forms and charts and to perform basic arithmetic.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others with attention to safety, productivity and positive relations

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as walking over rough or difficult terrain; frequent standing, stooping, climbing or walking; and recurring lifting/pushing/pulling of objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 75 pounds. The work may require specific physical characteristic and abilities, such as heightened strength, mobility, dexterity and full range of motion.
  • Must be able to see objects far away as in driving; hear normal sounds and communicate through human speech; learn Town procedures; and follow oral and written instructions
  • The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental risks, which require a range of safety and other precautions. Work may involve working around moving parts or machines, chemicals, and other elements that may require the employee to use personal protective equipment. Must be able to perform heavy, manual labor safely, effectively, and efficiently. Must be able to tolerate exposure to seasonal weather conditions in outside weather.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Three (3) years of experience in parks maintenance, landscaping, grounds maintenance, construction or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and qualifying experience substituting on a year-for-year basis.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • CDL Class B license required within one year of hire
