Position Type: Union-SEIU, Paraprofessional Special Education Program Support

Reports to: Building Principal

Terms of Employment: Salary, terms and other conditions of employment established by SEIU Local 517M Master Agreement.


Purpose:

Work under the direct supervision of certified staff to maintain a safe and healthy educational environment; to assist/support specific students with personal care activities and appropriate social behaviors; and to assist staff in reinforcing selected student educational and therapy activities. This position may be assigned to one or more students as needed.


Professional Qualifications:

Must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (equal to 60 semester hours); or
  • An associate's degree (or higher); or
  • A high school diploma (or the equivalent) with the ability to meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through the passage of an approved formal state academic assessment within 30 working days of hire.
  • The State Board of Education approved the following formal assessments by which a paraprofessional may choose to demonstrate this knowledge:
  • Basic Skills Examination: A passing score on the score Basic Skills Test MTTC
  • A passing score of at least 480 on the evidence-based reading and writing section of the SAT and 530 on the mathematics section in lieu of the Basic Skills Test or Professional Readiness Exam.
  • Other basic skills examination options: ETS Parapro Assessment- a passing score of 460 is required


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide instructional and behavioral support as needed
  • Collaborate with staff, students and parents to maintain a safe and productive learning environment
  • Maintains disciplinary control of assigned students
  • Is organized, self-directed and flexible to work with varied schedules and individual needs
  • Possesses the ability to communicate professionally, both orally and in writing
  • Performs other related duties which may be assigned by the referring teacher, instructional coach, and/or principal
  • Assume responsibility for his or her continuing professional growth and development through such efforts as reading professional journals and other publications
  • Attend meetings as required
  • Maintain high academic standards and expectations
  • Represent the school district in a positive manner
  • Know and follow school district policy and chain of command
  • Regular & reliable attendance
  • All other duties as assigned

The position requires a moderate amount of physical activity.

Terms of Employment:
180 days. Monday-Friday. This position generally follows the TRCS Academic Calendar. This position has non-working days during winter, spring and summer breaks as well as designated holidays.
