Summary:

The Oncology Navigator is responsible for monitoring, coordinating care and educating cancer patients and families. Monitors the quality of care delivered to all designated Cancer patients. Collaborates with physicians, mid-level providers and all members of the multidisciplinary team within PIC and local hospitals to insure that patients and their families receive services which reflect our commitment to caring for the body, mind and spirit.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Coordinates the care for Cancer patients including; facilitation with local hospital staff to ensure pre-operative or pre-treatment work ups are complete, in a timely manner and results provided to appropriate physicians and other care providers.
  • Assists in guiding the patient through the full continuum of care and treatment to help assure that all patient needs are met.
  • Coordinates with pertinent departments within Cancer Specialists of North Florida, local hospitals and outside agencies on continuity of care and appropriate referrals.
  • Collects and evaluates data related to the cancer population in order to provide information for program enhancement or improvement.
  • Provides individualized contact pre and post diagnosis with patients to discuss issues related to their diagnosis and functions in a support role for any problems encountered while progressing through follow-up treatment.
  • Assists with community based education programs, as needed. Participates in marketing the services to physicians, patients, families and community groups.
  • Assumes responsibility for maintaining own competency and continuing education of cancer screening, prevention and treatment by attending workshops and seminars, participating in professional organizations and reading current literature on breast care topics. Demonstrates competency to provide care appropriate to the age group of this patients' population.
  • Demonstrates effective communication with peers, multidisciplinary healthcare team and community organizations and resources.
  • Disseminates knowledge of the Navigator role to other healthcare team members through peer education, mentoring and preceptor experiences.
  • All other duties as assigned

Additional Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of current diagnostic and treatment methodologies for cancer.
  • Capable of comprehending, executing, acting, and directing independently under the established guideline of the position.
  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with members of the interdisciplinary team, including physicians, as well as external customers, patients and families.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership skills including but not limited to communication (written & oral), and teamwork/team building.
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently without close supervisor

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None

Education and/or Experience:

  • BSN Degree preferred
  • Three to five years Oncology experience required

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

BLS certificate required
