Basic Function:
Under the direction of the Manager/Director of the Rehabilitation Services Department, the occupational therapist is responsible for providing, arranging for, teaching and supervising occupational therapy services through the process of assessment, planning and implementation. He/she provides advisory service to other professionals who share responsibility for patient care and participates in the development of the rehabilitation program.

Requirements:
An occupational therapist must have a minimum of four years of education beyond high school attaining Bachelor of Science degree or Certificate of Occupational Therapy from a college with a program approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association. He/she should hold certification from the American Occupational Therapy Association. He/she must be licensed to practice occupational therapy in/by the State of New York.

Responsibilities:

  • EVALUATION AND TREATMENT – Occupational therapist provides evaluation and treatment of approved practices, policies, and procedures of the Rehab Department of Ellis Hospital and New York State law. Demonstrates skills and abilities to assess and treat toddler, school age child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients when employed in the inpatient and outpatient service area.
  • Provides approved documentation to appropriate authorities.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills with all persons involved in patient care and/or hospital activities.
  • Assures financial viability according to standards of practice.
  • Demonstrates his/her commitment to professional growth and competency.
  • Promotes effective interpersonal and interdisciplinary relationships – professional conduct.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures related to mandatory education, annual health assessment, and licensure verification.
