JOB SUMMARY

Packages Receiving Manager is responsible for the Packages Department and team pertaining to all personal packages in Gerlach from the USPS, FedEx, UPS, and independent shippers during the Burning Man event. This position oversees and coordinates the setup, operations, and breakdown of the Packages Department and transports all mail and packages under their purview to Black Rock City during the event; Pre and post event organizes all packages out of the Gerlach Office for staff pickup.


This is a temporary,
full-time, Exempt role, based in Black Rock City, Nevada and Gerlach, NV running from July to October, 2023.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


PERCENTAGE OF TIME SPENT


Administrative Coordination ( 30%)


  • Utilize procurement software, primary email, and printer.
  • Coordinate with the Packages Crew daily to ensure that administrative records are updated.
  • Communicate regularly with Burning Man Staff to ensure all know how they will receive packages.
  • Communicate directly with the Gerlach Office Administrator on at least a weekly basis to provide updates on the Packages Department operations and crew status. If needed, communicate immediately with any needs of the Packages Department to ensure operations continue uninterrupted.
  • Track and file paperwork that pertains to the Packages Department operations.
  • Ensure the Packages Department database is updated on what items have been received and delivered promptly.


Packages Logistical Operations (25 %)


  • Create, purchase, and maintain a list of consumables to operate the Packages Department operations.
  • Be responsible for the movement of the Packages Department between Gerlach and Black Rock City.
  • Ensure there is a creation of an SOP for the entire operation of the Packages department.
  • Ensure an SOP is created for each crew position for off-playa and on-playa Packages Department operations.
  • Create a pre-event, Black Rock City event, and post-event operations schedule for the Packages department.


Crew Management (40 %)


  • Manage the delivery of personnel to and from Playa and Geralch according to Burning Man protocols.
  • Create schedules, and track and monitor the daily hours of each member of the Packages Department so that the crew stays on task.
  • Train the Packages crew and affiliated staff according to the appropriate SOP, and monitor the daily performance of the Packages crew.
  • Ensure the tidiness and maintenance of the Packages Department containers, trucks, and affiliated areas are taken care of daily.
  • Create a staff schedule to complete crew duties sufficiently.


Other Functions and Responsibilities (5%)


  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Documentation
    - Drives the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to assigned duties.
  • Teaching – Takes a leadership role in the acculturation and training of staff. Teaches live or e-learning classes, as requested. Promotes a culture of teaching and learning throughout the community.
  • Mentoring - Mentors subordinates in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and experience that will allow them to advance in the organization. Aids, encourages and inspires their team.
  • Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes. Participates in conferences, forums, and networking events, where appropriate.
  • Speaking – Represents Burning Man as a subject matter expert and culture-bearer, as requested.


QUALIFICATIONS


Required


  • Ability to adjust schedule seasonally to work in Gerlach and the Burning Man Event in Nevada.
  • Knowledge of office machine use.
  • Able to take direction and foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Personal integrity; able to uphold a high standard of confidentiality.
  • Open to change and a variety of daily tasks.
  • A respectful and polite demeanor; able to provide services with care and receive inquiries with patience and graciousness.
  • Familiarity with Google Suite, specifically Google Sheets.
  • Establish and maintain a clean and safe worksite while utilizing the necessary OSHA approved safety equipment.

  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS


  • Valid driver’s license and a good driving record.


COMPENSATION:

Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated pay rate for this position is $_1,100_ to $_1,200__ per week.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT


  • Off-playa:
    This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
