Newsletter Editor Job at Financial Times

Financial Times New York, NY

The role

The FT’s newsletter team is looking for an editor to join its award-winning team in New York. Readers subscribing to our emails increased 90 per cent in 2022 and newsletters are a growing part of the FT’s revenue stream, as well as fundamental to our strategy.

We’re looking for a newsletter editor who has a careful eye for accuracy, style, grammar and flow, but also a keen sensibility for what works well specifically for a newsletter audience. The editor should be able to write a snappy subject line, work with writers to improve their copy, encourage reader engagement and grow audiences. You should have experience using data to discern what is or is not working in a newsletter.

Your primary responsibility will be writing First Asia, our flagship newsletter which goes out to tens of thousands of readers every weekday. You will also have the opportunity to assist on other products across the FT’s suite of 30+ newsletters including Due Diligence and Moral Money. This role will allow you to develop your editing and writing skills, and collaborate with the wider FT newsroom.

You’ll be adept at building relationships across the newsroom, have excellent digital and analytical skills, and will be confident in news judgement and editing high-quality content.

This position is offered initially as a 12 month contract with the possibility of extension or conversion to a permanent role - however, this is not guaranteed. The working days for this position are Sunday to Thursday.

Key responsibilities

  • Writing and producing the Asia edition of the FirstFT newsletter
  • Compiling and producing the FirstFT quiz each week
  • Optimising newsletter performance by using metrics to inform decisions
  • Contributing creative and innovative ideas on how to improve FT newsletters
  • Assisting with the editing of other FT newsletters

Key skills

  • Excellent editing skills and proven ability to produce the highest quality work on a consistent basis, to tight deadlines
  • Experience of curating high-quality editorial content for engaged audiences
  • Direct experience working on newsletters, as well as being a keen consumer of newsletters from a variety of outlets — and knowing what differentiates them from other media products
  • Demonstrable ability to use analytics tools and data reports to influence strategic editorial direction
  • An interest in Asian politics would be preferred

Please submit your application by the end of the day, 2nd March 2023.
