Overview:
The Network Services Technician II is a member of the team responsible for providing reliable network services to the University community. This role is a vital contributor to network infrastructure deployment projects and network maintenance across campus. Working closely with members of tier 2 and tier 3 engineering teams, the technician installs, configures, maintains, and troubleshoots all LAN/WAN, wireless, and other service impacting issues to ensure efficient network functionality. The technician also contributes to all network projects.

In addition, the network services technician serves as a knowledge expert on fiber, cat5, Cat6 and coax media and is responsible for installing and maintaining the University cable infrastructure. The technician will plan and complete all stages of the cable installation life cycle, including assessment, materials selection, infrastructure design, performance and quality assurance, and updating the master database.
Responsibilities:
  • Prepare faulty hardware replacements, such as switches, routers, access points, and Cisco phones.
  • Perform initial troubleshooting through issuing basic software commands.
  • Log/document command outputs and share results with senior level tier 2 engineers.
  • Provide console access from onsite to tier 2 engineers resolving network issues.
  • Under specific circumstances, perform complete RMA, update the IOS to standard approved version on the new device, restore configuration on the new device, run testing and validation steps independently, and make sure the newly deployed device is added to monitoring systems.
  • Identify, test, and replace faulty patch cables.
  • Ensure proper labels are updated when new devices are installed.
  • Perform failover testing to validate redundant connectivity.
  • Confirm proper services and functions are operational.
  • Qualify incoming work orders for campus field services.
  • Close incidents in the service management system and report back to related teams.
  • Assist with building project schedules.
  • Identify, classify, inventory, and coordinate materials and tools disbursement used by technicians for networking, telecommunication projects, maintenance, or repairs.
  • Create cut sheets for upgrades.
  • Prepare patch cables and labels.
  • Receive required switches from inventory and deploy configuration on new switches.
  • Test equipment in the lab before production implementation.
  • Proactively participate in professional development opportunities to continuously enhance technical skills.
Qualifications:
Essential Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience installing, configuring and supporting a mid- to large-scale network infrastructure
  • Knowledge of network monitoring protocols and tools, such as MRTG and Nagios
  • Tier 1 wireless knowledge, including Aruba 300 and 500 AP models
  • Familiarity with 802.11ac and 802.11ax standards
  • Knowledge of layer 2 switching technologies
  • Foundational understanding of Aruba platform, router, and switches
  • Familiar with Aruba and Cisco hardware, including routers switches and VOIP phones
  • Familiarity and ability to identify various telecommunication and network materials and tools
  • Commitment to professional, courteous customer service
  • Effective communication skills, ability to comprehend instructions, and write correspondence
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to lift 50 to 75 pounds
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team environment
  • Network plus, CCNA, ACSA trained
  • CCNA, ACSA certified
  • Understanding of layer 3 routing protocols, IGPs, and BGP
  • Understanding of network monitoring protocols and tools
  • Basic understanding of ServiceNow
