The Recovery Navigator is the point of contact in community for establishing recovery programs, providing educational presentations; and facilitating communication and coordination of substance abuse treatment and recovery services to individuals who have been admitted for an abuse of substances or overdose and would benefit from referral and linkage to treatment and recovery support services.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Meet personally in emergency rooms with patients who have recently overdosed
  • Refer patients to treatment and recovery support services based on their interest
  • Increase the easy access to evidence-based treatment and recovery support programs to individuals in ERs/EDs who present for substance use related issues
  • Build and maintain relationships with employees and leadership teams at designated hospitals (may include other local healthcare facilities including health departments and clinics)
  • Build and enhance community based resources including relationships with faith bases organizations in partnership with current Project Lifeline
  • When able, supporting community forums facilitated by current Project Lifeline to reduce stigma associated with addiction issues
  • When able, coordinate with community partners to increase the availability of evident-based recovery programs such as, but not limited to, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA)
  • Attend required trainings and organization meetings
  • Maintain or become certified as a Peer Recovery Specialist with the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services
  • Submit all required data components through state of Tennessee reporting platform
  • Ensure compliance with all HIPAA regulations according to CADAS policy and procedure
  • Assists the TN Redline operated by Tennessee Association of Alcohol, Drug, and other Addiction Services (TAADAS) in providing warm hand-offs and direct referrals to TDMHSAS funded treatment and/or recovery services.
  • Provide enhanced follow-up with providers and/or individuals who the Lifeline Coordinator referred to treatment and/or recovery services
  • When able, deliver presentations to civic groups on stigma associated with substance abuse and addiction

Regulatory Requirements:
  • Certified Peer Recovery Specialist required and must maintain certification in accordance with state standards
  • Four year college degree or equivalent experience preferred in heath education, social work, and/or behavioral health-related field
  • Willing to travel regionally to local emergency departments
  • Background check prior to employment
  • Valid Tennessee Driver’s License and proof of insurance

Language Skills:
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Additional languages preferred

Skills:
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of chemical dependency and the skill to effectively counsel individuals in treatment
  • A minimum of two years’ continuous sobriety and active participation in a 12 Step program (if in recovery); ability to communicate with a diverse group of individuals and respond to inquiries an issues with tact and good judgment; writing ability to maintain accurate records; verbal communication skills to make effective presentations and lead groups; ability to interface with persons inside and outside the agency and promote a positive image for CADAS.
