Your New Role - Stewardship Forester
Our work is meaningful. You’ll be supporting an agency completing critical forestry work across the state. Oregon is proud of its forests, and our staff are proud of the work we accomplish to protect, manage, and promote forest stewardship.
As the Stewardship Forester you will administer the Forest Practices Act and rules; assist landowners in obtaining their objectives and providing for the societal values of the citizens of this state by offering information and assistance that encourages long term investments in forest management activities that are consistent with sound management of soil, air, water, fish and wildlife resources.
This is accomplished with statues, rules, programs and policies that relate to: forest practices; reforestation tax credits; cost share and grant funding; fire protection; integrated pest management; resource protection; voluntary measures in the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds; and best management practices to maintain water quality.
This position is important as the incumbent is usually the primary contact for private landowners with the Department’s programs and regulatory functions. In this respect the person in this job has the opportunity to mold or reinforce a positive attitude by landowners about forest resources.
This position also provides technical advice and assistance to non-industrial, private landowners and administers and coordinates state and federal cost-share and incentive programs in Coos and Curry counties and provides forest taxation information to family forest landowners. Some duties include:
  • Assist operators and landowners prepare Notification of Operation and permits to use fire or operate power driven machinery.
  • Evaluate notifications, review and comment on written plans and approve plans for alternate practices consistent with Oregon’s Forest Practices Act.
  • Inspect forestry operations for compliance with Oregon’s Forest Practices Act.
  • Inspect and monitor reforestation requirements.
  • Investigate complaints registered from the general public.
  • Provide technical advice and assistance to non-industrial, private landowners and administers and coordinates state and federal cost-share and incentive programs.
Minimum Qualifications:
Two years of experience in Forestry and any natural resource program area and
  • A Bachelor's degree in Forestry or any natural resource program area, or
  • Three additional years of related (pertinent) experience;
OR
One year of experience in Forestry and any natural resource program area, and a Master's degree in Forestry and any natural resource program area.
OR
a Doctorate degree in Forestry and any natural resource program area.
Requested Skills:
  • Working knowledge of forest management technology and recommended best management practices.
  • Proven experience as an excellent communicator who is honest, fair and inclusive among employees, partners and stakeholders.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills including working with operators, landowners, and the general public in communicating technical information and prescriptive standards.
  • Experience providing education and outreach to a variety of users such as landowners, operators, small woodland owners, and other agencies in classroom/workshop and/or field tour settings etc.
  • Working knowledge of GIS applications and ability to manipulate data and create maps.
  • Some knowledge and/or experience in timber harvest layout, cruising timber, locating road and landing locations, and harvest contract administration.

  • The salary listed is the non-PERS qualifying salary range. If the successful candidate is PERS qualifying or once the successful candidate becomes PERS eligible, the salary range will be increased by an additional 6.95%.
