General Statement of Job

Under general supervision, supports the Museum Specialist in managing the collections at Spotsylvania County Museum. Assists in fulfilling research inquiries and requests. Assists in the coordination of public programming and community events. Assists in creating accessible and educational content on social media and the museum website. Reports to the Museum Specialist.

Special Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists in creating and displaying new exhibits in the museum and various public buildings and county historic sites.
  • Assists in maintaining outdoor wayside site exhibits in Spotsylvania County.
  • Assists in collection audits.
  • Interacts with the public as needed concerning the museum and County history.
  • Interacts with other public institutions and private citizens for the loan and/or donation of historic objects following established guidelines.
  • Writes and modifies historic articles, promotional information, and events to the museum website and social media pages.
  • Assists in collections management and inputs accurate historic data in PastPerfect, conducts background research on objects, takes photographs of objects for records, and properly stores artifacts in the collections building.
  • Conducts extensive research on artifacts in the collections as needed.
  • Assists in planning and executed museum special events.
  • Provides tours and specialized programs on County history as requested.
  • Works weekends and evenings as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Training & Experience

College coursework in Museum Studies, Historic Preservation, History or related field. Bachelor’s Degree in related field preferred and/or experience in field, related area or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge of historic preservation and/or museum operations preferred.

Must possess and maintain a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license.

  • Knowledge of best practices used in museum operations.
  • Knowledge of Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms.
  • Knowledge in PastPerfect museum software.
  • Knowledge of proper copyright procedures.
  • Skilled in utilizing local research resources.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with County, State and federal officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments. Work with little direct supervision as situations warrant.
  • Ability to exhibit mathematical ability to handle required calculations using percentages and decimals.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and proficiency with computers.
  • Ability to read a variety of informational documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures.
  • Ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech.
  • Ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English and well-modulated voice.
  • Ability to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques, to make independent judgments in absence of supervision, and to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures and policies, and to follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines and objectives.
  • Ability to utilize mathematical formulas, add and subtract totals, multiply and divide, determine percentages, and determine time and weight.
  • Ability to communicate respectfully and professionally.
