Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.

For at least 4,000 years, people have been growing food in this region, and the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces tells this amazing story through interactive exhibits, demonstrations, oral histories, objects, and educational programs. The campus features several barns, animals, a greenhouse, play areas for children, an amphitheater, the Heritage Garden and much more. Permanent and changing exhibits, as well as a theater, library, gift shop, snack bar, and meeting rooms are located in the 100,000-square-feet, ranch-style Bruce King Building.

Preserves and maintains artifact collections for research, perpetuity, exhibit, and educational purposes. Monitors, maintains, and cares for the artifacts and storage to ensure each meets professional standards set forth by AAM. Responsible for assessing needs for acquiring additional artifacts as outlined by the collections development policy, completing deed of gift, and accessioning artifacts. Responsible for processing loans, and providing outreach, educational, and research assistance in support of the museum's mission.

Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date.

How does it get done?

The Museum Technician will preserve and conserve the museum's artifact collection and maintain collection records. Actively participates with the exhibit development team in production, installation, and maintenance. Monitors collections storage and exhibit gallery environments to promote preservation and prevent artifact damage.

The residents of New Mexico, museum visitors, museum staff, and the Department of Cultural Affairs staff.

Ideal Candidate

Preference of master's degree plus three (3) years of experience in museum studies, art history, anthropology, or related field in a museum or a bachelor's degree with five (5) years in museum studies, art history, anthropology, or related field in a museum.

Minimum Qualification

Associate's degree in art history or other area of specialization such as museum studies, museology, conservation science, anthropology or history and two (2) years of supervised experience working with museum artifacts/collections. Depending upon the museum and the nature of the position, the hiring agency may modify the experience. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.

Working Conditions

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.

Must be able to sit and stand for long periods, work at a computer for an extended time, work with the public in a professional business- like manner, and travel when needed. May be required to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as necessary. Must have the ability to visually inspect artwork and artifacts. Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
