Job Summary

The Analytical Technology department is part of the SABIC global Corporate Technology and Innovation (T&I) organization, with multiple global locations. The analytical technology organization in North America provides extensive analytical expertise in the area of advanced chromatography, spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and microscopy to support T&I programs across Strategic Business Units, delivering innovative solutions for the circular economy, in automotive, healthcare, building and construction, electronics and other markets.


SABIC is extending the development of polyolefins in one of the SABIC Technology Centers (STC-Houston). We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, creative and highly skilled analytical professional with broad knowledge in instrumental analysis and proven expertise in the molecular characterization of polyolefins. You will use your expertise to be part of this exciting adventure acting as a liaison between the Analytical Science team and SABIC R&D. As member of the Analytical Science team in STC-Houston and working together globally, your main objective is to implement and operate state-of-the-art analytical equipment used for the molecular characterization of polyolefins such as High-Temperature SEC and advanced CCD (Chemical Composition Distribution) fractionation techniques. You may expect routine hands on analytical tests depending on the project needs. The role will also focus on developing analytical methods, executing, and coordinating molecular characterization within the analytical team, across multi-functional teams, and with external collaborators to provide effective analytical support to product development and process optimization.

How You Can Be the Impact

(Job Responsibilities)

  • Create, in strong collaboration with a global molecular characterization team, a strong base for the characterization of polyolefins by setting-up new analytical capabilities such as HT-SEC, CEF and TGIC.
  • Design and execute both novel and routine experiments using molecular characterization expertise, provide in-depth data interpretation, communicate results and solutions to internal and external stakeholders, present and publish when appropriate. Translate the knowledge and cross-train colleagues as required.
  • Completes workload as assigned within project timelines. Operate, troubleshoot and oversee maintenance of analytical instruments. Implement and monitor rigorous quality control program. Maintain inventory of supplies and consumables. Ensure reliability and continuity of service. Document methods and processes in accordance with EHS (Environment, health and safety) policies including SOPs (Standard Operation Procedure) and MOCs (Management of Change).
  • Provide technical and personal leadership in the area of molecular characterization and be able to apply them with a hands-on mindset to support polyolefin R&D activities,
  • Actively engage with key stakeholders to foster ideation and innovation in the Analytical Sciences. Stay current on novel molecular characterization techniques and new applications. Identify unmet analytical needs, organize and perform feasibility studies and assessments, and drive the acquisition of new instruments/techniques.
  • Collaborate strongly with other molecular characterization experts in order to help elevate SABIC’s global expertise
  • Participate in cross-functional and global safety, quality improvement and knowledge exchange programs.


What Matters to SABIC

(Job Requirements)

  • PhD degree in physics, material science, chemistry or other related fields. Or MSc with 3+ years’ experience in the field of polyolefin. Solid post academic industrial laboratory experience is a plus.
  • Expertise and detailed understanding of HT-SEC applied to polyolefins with IR, and DV
  • Previous experience with polyolefin fractionation techniques such as CEF and TGIC is preferred
  • Broad knowledge of analytical techniques in the areas of chromatography and spectroscopy, especially for the characterization of petrochemical products.
  • Good knowledge of polyolefin synthetic processes, formulation and compounding as well as applications is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently on multiple projects with high enthusiasm and drive
  • Hands-on mindset with flexibility, creativity and independence.
  • Advanced skills in MS Excel® or MATLAB enabling development of automated tools (e.g. macros) for data processing and visualization of analytical results.
  • Knowledge of statistical data analysis, design of experiments. Experience with statistics software (such as for instance Minitab or JMP).
  • Excellent English spoken and written language skills


Work Availability

Regular, predictable attendance is an essential function of this position. Applicants must be regularly available and willing to work 5 days a week.
