Overview:
  • Medical Coding Specialist I, Janesville, Days, 80 hrs / 2 wks
  • Fully remote options for those with experience, or Janesville,WI
  • Hybrid remote optional as well and flexible work schedule available. Mercyhealth does not currently support remote workers with residency in the following states: CA, OH, OR, PA, NJ, NY.
Reviews assigned provider procedure and diagnosis codes, and makes coding changes as necessary. Provides timely feedback to providers regarding documentation guidelines, coding, and audits. Performs other duties as assigned. May be asked to work weekends and reasonable amounts of overtime when necessary.
Responsibilities:
  • Works with appropriate medical staff and other coders when performing coding functions.
  • Performs standard coding, charge entry and registration.
  • Works with billing partners in developing efficient coding processes by reviewing incoming denials.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of common coding and documentation requirements within the medical offices.
  • Responds to customer concerns through coding reviews requested by other departments.
  • Liaison to the clinics for coding issues and concerns.
  • Research and process missing provider charges.
  • Keep updated on applicable regulations, laws and procedures.
  • Maintains a close working relationship with assigned providers and medical office, frequently querying the provider when coding discrepancies arise.
  • Reviews Advanced Beneficiary Notices (ABNs) and confirms that the form is valid with regards to the information entered on it. Provides education to the appropriate medical office when discrepancies are identified.
  • Works as a team to achieve productivity goals.
Education and Experience:
High School graduate or equivalent
Prefer one year of experience coding professional services or two years in the medical field
Post high school course in medical terminology is preferred
Certification/Licensure:
Certified Professional Coder-Apprentice (CPC-A) or other equivalent coding certification preferred

While performing the duties of this job, the partner is regularly required to talk and hear. Eyesight to identify numbers, folders, colors, and computer printouts. Speech to communicate one-on-one and over the telephone. Manual dexterity to operate keyboards, mouse and telephones. Prolonged sitting; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The partner is occasionally required to stand; walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The partner must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
