Overview:
This is a position for a Medical Assistant II with the EVMS Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgeons. Under direct supervision, this position will assist with clinical assignments for assigned care teams within the Department.

Responsibilities:
Prior to the assigned clinic starting, checking all exam rooms for cleanliness and ensuring that adequate supplies are in stock in those rooms.

Scan upcoming appointments for additional medical record information necessary. Obtain medical records from other physician offices, hospitals, labs, emergency rooms, and radiology prior to patient visit.

At the conclusion of clinics at the end of the day, cleaning the rooms and ensuring all clinical equipment has been secured and properly put away per department standards.

Greet patients in the waiting room and escort them to the clinical floor. Identify yourself, the healthcare provider you are assisting, and discuss what the patient can expect from today’s visit.

Triage the patient by obtaining and recording vital signs, common complaints, past medical history, past surgical history, smoking status and any other applicable clinical information as directed by the healthcare provider. Additionally, a reconciliation of medication will occur.

Appropriately document all triaged healthcare information in the Allscripts EMR while in the room with the patient per Department and Medical School policy.

Ensure all potential records that the patient may have brought with them to the appointment, including imaging, is appropriately added to the EMR and provided to the healthcare provider for review.

Provide clinical equipment to the healthcare provider upon request. Upon the provider completing their use of the clinical equipment, assist in the proper cleaning and disinfecting of the equipment.

At the conclusion of the patient’s appointment, clean the exam room and prepare for the next patient to be able to utilize the room.

When not assigned to assist providers with the above referenced activities, the individual in this role will provide additional clinical/administrative support as needed. Common duties are as follows:

Scanning in clinical documents into the EMR.

Checking supplies and documenting what clinical items need to be ordered. Providing the clinical coordinator with a list of those requested items.

Checking exam rooms, and supply closets, for expired medication.

Assisting with ordering of testing and imaging as needed and requested.

Appropriately document all nursing interventions in the electronic medical record. Review the chart for completeness, test results and billing.

The successful candidate in this role shall respond to questions from patients, family members, faculty/residents, other health care providers in a timely and professional manner. Patient inquiries should be answered on the same day they are received, before leaving for the day.

Participate in all staff meetings, education lectures and quality improvement activities.

Follow EVMS Medical Group protocols related to infection control, environmental safety and patient confidentiality. Complete annual recertification for Blood Borne Pathogens, HIPAA Compliance Training, Respiratory FIT and IT Policy. Maintain current CPR certification and any updates relating to M.A. Certification.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
High school diploma plus successful completion of a Medical Assistant program and certification (RMA or CMA) required. Equivalent military training will be accepted. Completion of BLS class and re-certify every 2 years.

At least one (1) year of experience as a Medical Assistant is required.

Experience in a “fast paced” ambulatory setting.

Ability to balance multiple priorities and tasks.

Ability to make professional decisions under the supervision of the physicians and licensed nurses.

Possess professional interaction skills with physicians, outside offices, pharmacies, referring agencies, hospital personnel and support staff.

Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills

Have the ability to read and comprehend all information required for this position

Have the ability to calculate figures and amounts required for medication administration
