The Maine Department of Marine Resources, seeking qualified candidates for a Marine Resource Scientist II position in the Biological Monitoring & Assessment Division.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: The Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is seeking applicants with strong scientific and managerial skills for a Marine Resource Scientist II position in the Biological Monitoring & Assessment Division of the Bureau of Marine Science located at the West Boothbay Harbor laboratory.

As a Marine Resource Scientist II, you would be serving as the coordinator and supervisor for the Lobster Sea Sampling (LSS) and the Regional Juvenile Lobster Ventless Trap Survey (VTS) programs. The data you would be collecting in these programs directly contributes to the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission American Lobster Stock Assessment and lobster research across the region. Your primary responsibilities would include:

  • Leading the LSS monitoring effort by participating in and/or supervising 21 sampling trips per month throughout the seven lobster management zones from May through November. This is a fishery-dependent survey that relies on the voluntary participation of industry members.
  • Leading the VTS program which requires participating in and/or supervising 18 sampling trips per month from June through August. You would be managing the logistics, survey design, and data quality checks that are unique to this fishery-independent survey.
  • Maintaining the lobster research program database, overseeing data entry compilation, producing annual summary statistics/reports for publication, and assisting in writing semi-annual and annual grant reports.
  • Supervising a number of scientific staff and contractors who would be participating as samplers in your lobster fishery monitoring programs.

You may also have opportunities to:

  • Develop and implement research projects addressing emerging questions in the lobster fishery.
  • Work on modifications to current sampling methods and expansions to our current surveys.
  • Participate in other survey efforts across the Department including but not limited to the Maine-New Hampshire Inshore Trawl Survey, larval lobster survey, and the lobster settlement survey.

Our ideal candidate would be joining us with most of the following abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience with long term monitoring survey design and analysis.
  • Knowledge of stock assessments and fisheries statistics.
  • Familiarity with relational database structure and implementation.
  • Experience with the Maine commercial lobster fleet.
  • Strong knowledge of ArcGIS, Microsoft Access, and R.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelors Degree in a scientific, technical, or engineering field or equivalent in directly related work experience and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience or graduate education in the field of marine resource research and/or management or related field. Preference will be given to previous experience in a supervisory capacity. Equivalent experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
