SUMMARY

The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for applying engineering principles through planning and development of tools, methods, processes, and equipment that maximize the quality of the final product in the most effective, efficient, and economic way possible. This position will support the foundry operations.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Verify that the production process produces a quality part that meets or exceeds customer expectations.
  • Develop standard work for proper line balance while maintaining the required TAKT time.
  • Collect and analyze data to understand process performance and the sources of variation.
  • Conduct time-&-motion studies while analyzing rate settings for the annual review of the Mold & Labor standards.
  • Create, audit, and improve standard work in conjunction with the area leader.
  • Lead capital projects through definition, justification, and implementation.
  • Lead and actively participate in continuous improvement, problem-solving and Kaizen activities thru Altra Business System.
  • Collaborate with pattern shop, melt, production, quality, maintenance, and product engineering personnel.
  • Assist with cost analysis on make vs. buy process.
  • Prepare cost justifications as required for the expenditure processes to determine recovery.
  • Develop a full understanding of value stream mapping to make improvements.
  • Plan lay-outs of new equipment, while maintain Foundry plant flow.
  • Develop productivity systems to monitor the utilization of resources.

  • Demonstrated understanding of common manufacturing processes, equipment, or machinery, including strong knowledge in mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic applications.
  • Strong analytical ability to recognize need for modification of procedures or processes, identify root cause, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions where limited standardization or information exists.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with reading and understanding blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and performing complex mathematical calculations (including trigonometry).
  • Demonstrated problem solving and critical thinking skills, including having a continuous improvement, "go and see" mindset and an advocate for driving change with sense of urgency and detailed oriented.
  • Strong interpersonal skills which foster teamwork and collaboration and develops high quality working relationships to influence, gain support, and achieve results. This includes a strong cooperation with production, engineering, and maintenance personnel, as well as external customers and vendors.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively deliver and transfer knowledge of technical concepts to production associates and respond to questions.
  • Willingness to be flexible and adapt to changes in internal processes, delays, or unexpected events to meet daily customer demand and on time delivery requirements, including performing any task required to meet department objectives.
  • Willingness and ability to work extended hours, including weekends as required to support manufacturing needs.
  • Results-oriented with a demonstrated ability to be self-directed and self-motivated, effectively manage time and multiple priorities, and meet deliverables in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and handle proprietary and sensitive information with integrity.
  • Intermediate to advanced level proficiency MS Office software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Willing and able to occasionally travel domestically up to 25% to other Altra sites, vendor and/or customer visits, training events, trade shows, etc.


Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering is required
  • 3+ years of related engineering experience in a fast-paced manufacturing production and/or machining environment with proven success in implementing process or product improvements is required
  • Prior experience with mechanical assembly, product testing, electromechanical power transmission technology and applications is desired.
  • Experience using advanced quality tools and/or lean manufacturing concepts is desired.

Work environment

Primarily in the foundry environment and secondarily performing office work. Includes regular exposure to noise levels at or above 85 decibels, dust particles, light radiation, paint or oil products, and weather changes. Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be required to be worn during shift.
