Axelrod Performing Arts Center (APAC) invites individuals with a talent for maintaining high-functioning operations and systems, thinking and working strategically, and results-driven leadership to submit their interest to serve as Managing Director. The Managing Director is a co-leader working in partnership with the APAC’s Artistic Director, reporting directly to the APAC Executive Board. This is a critical time for the APAC, as it expands its programming from its 500-seat main stage in Park to a second venue, a 275-seat theater at Bell Works in Holmdel, where it also maintains its own professional ballet company the Axelrod Contemporary Ballet Theater (AXCBT) and its arts-education arm, the Axelrod Performing Arts Academy (APAA).

The Managing Director will contribute to the future growth of the organization by building, leading and mentoring staff, being an intrinsic partner to artistic leadership, ensuring fiscal stability and focusing on new ways to increase visibility and capacity, being an active civic leader in the Monmouth County community and beyond, and finding new ways to amplify APAC’s message to current and future patrons and supporters.

POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Managing Director of APAC will lead the company in partnership with Artistic Director Andrew DePrisco. As APAC’s chief administrative officer, the Managing Director will advocate for–and be a leader to–the company’s staff and ensure financial success within the organization. Transparency and approachability are key characteristics for the sort of leadership that APAC hopes to see in its Managing Director. The overarching priorities of the position include the following:

  • Establish and maintain a relationship of trust, encouragement, collaboration, and joyful exploration APAC’s Artistic Director, AXCBT Director, APAA Director, staff, Board, artists, and supporters.
  • Ensure that all systems and procedures are aligned with a management philosophy that honors integrity and a dedication to strong business ethics; this focus in on Business department, Box Office, Marketing, Development and other areas.
  • Oversee all administrative and operational functions and look for efficiencies and improvements to protocol.
  • Work closely with Board Treasurer and Business Manager to lead annual budgeting process and monitor financial performance against goals, always anticipating changes that need to be made well in advance of need. Review capital investments with Artistic Director and recommend/execute purchases.
  • Work closely with the APAC Executive Board to develop leadership and to help lead strategic planning process, examining mission, vision, and core values and how they may shift and change and be the constant measure in all of the theater’s planning and execution.
  • Work closely with Development Director, be a financial development leader from both a contributed and earned income perspective, taking the time to learn about the philanthropic and patron culture in the region and to identify or create new previously unexplored revenue opportunities.
  • Serve as a great partner to Artistic Director, modeling an advanced sense of collaboration that APAC believes should exist in all parts of its organizational culture, including the Axelrod Contemporary Ballet Theater and the Axelrod Academy.
  • Take a progressive approach to improving communication within all departments of the organization, including the theater, Ballet and Academy.
  • Working closely with the Marketing Director, find innovative and effective ways to share APAC’s message with an ever-expanding base of patrons and supporters, including the encouragement of special events, galas, and fund-raisers.
  • Focus on way to expand diversity in the organization, including Board, staff, artists, production team, etc. Initiate DEAI staff training and follow through.

While no single individual will likely possess all of these qualifications, the Search Committee will make their evaluation on the following criteria:

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $80,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
