Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Maintenance and Engineering, the Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the efficient, economic, and safe operation and maintenance of the hospital electrical systems and physical plant (building and hospital electrical systems and physical plant (building and grounds, general maintenance, mechanical systems and central power plant). The incumbent directly supervises and is responsible for employees in the electrical, mechanical and general building trades to effect preventive maintenance.

The incumbent must possess a working knowledge of the theory and experience of operation of hospital electrical and emergency power equipment and systems, mechanical systems and central power plant. His capabilities must further include general building trade experience to effect plumbing systems, refrigeration systems, air handling systems, pneumatic controls, boilers, chilled water systems, medical gas systems, water treatment systems and plant utilities, etc.

The incumbent must be familiar with applicable JCAHO standards and other laws or codes and implement a system of preventive maintenance to insure compliance with it. The maintenance supervisor will play an active role in the selection, purchase, and installation of new electrical, mechanical and physical plant equipment and systems and be accountable for equipment performance as warranted by manufacturers; also, be accountable for surveillance of warranty and service agreements.

The incumbent will maintain equipment and systems diagrams, parts lists, service and maintenance instructions, and operating procedures on all applicable electrical, mechanical and physical plant equipment, as well as a reasonable perpetual inventory of replacement parts and accessories to minimize delay of service.

The incumbent will establish, develop and implement a system of quality control, including preventive and corrective equipment maintenance to effect a safe environment for patients, visitors and personnel and document same inspections. The incumbent will assist in training of personnel in safe, efficient operation of equipment as requested by department heads or supervisors, within policies established by Administration.

Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalent is required
  • Junior College/Technical School is required
  • Minimum of 5+ Years of Position-Related Experience

The Maintenance Supervisor must possess the following background in formal education and/or experience:

  • First Class Stationary Engineer License.
  • Master Electrician License or Plumbing License.
  • Five years experience as a journeyman in electrical or buildings trade craft.
  • Basic plumbing, including waste and vent systems, medical gas piping, chilled water systems and pneumatic air systems.
  • Basic refrigeration, including repair and maintenance of ice making machines and dietary refrigerators and freezers.
  • Air handling system including associated ductwork, fans, preheat and reheat coils, heating and cooling coils, pumps, temperature controls, etc.
  • Ability to supervise and motivate maintenance and engineering personnel.
  • Experience in effecting new construction and remodeling project work.
  • Ability to mold all of the above into congruous, workable systems from construction to daily usage service.

Participate in continuing education to keep abreast of advancements in hospital engineering maintenance system technology.
