Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s degree in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Essential Job Functions
  • Install, maintain, repair and adjust all types of commercial door locking hardware including exit devices, mortise locks, cylindrical locks, electronic access control and automatic power door openers
  • Maintain multiple computerized databases for tracking and cataloging of keys and to maintain door keying records
  • Makes new keys; replaces broken or lost keys.
  • Maintain and expand several existing university master key systems
  • Ability to create new master key systems
  • Responds to routine and emergency call for repair and service.
  • Provide assistance on construction projects by determining locking requirements and systems from blueprints/ schematics or sketches
  • Ability to open a locked door without a key
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed and inventory used
  • Accurately wire access control controllers and door hardware using supplied schematics
  • Able to respond to after-hours emergency calls

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
  • Knowledge of locks, security systems, low voltage wiring, door closers and other door hardware
  • Skill in the use and safe operation of various hand and power tools
  • Skill in diagnosing the cause of lock and door malfunctions
  • Knowledge of building codes, as they relate to ADA and fire egress requirements.
  • Able to select the proper key blank and accurately duplicate a key.
  • Knowledge of computer data bases and email programs
  • Ability to work as a team member with fellow locksmiths and other trades
  • Basic knowledge of safes for combination changes
  • Skilled in Automotive key cutting and programming
  • Must have valid driver’s license and the ability to operate University vehicles Must have North Carolina Locksmith License. Apprentice license is acceptable but must obtain license within 1 year.

Preferred Qualifications
Locksmith CRL or equivalent certification from ALOA or other locksmith certification agency.
3 years journey- level locksmith.
Must have or be able to obtain an Active North Carolina Locksmith License.
Knowledge of low voltage electrical.
Basic computer skills.

Work Schedule/Hours
6:00am – 3:00pm or 7:00am – 4:00pm Monday through Friday. Schedule may vary due to work load, service activities, and emergency call backs after normal working hours.

This position is subject to Primary and Secondary call back schedules.

Position is considered Mandatory and is expected to be available to work during University emergencies, closures and adverse weather events.

Physical Demands of Position
Employee will be subject to extremes of heat, cold, dust, and dirt on a daily basis. Routinely lifting up to 20 pounds and required on a limited basis be subject to assist with up to 50 lbs with the aid or assistance of a team member. Call back situations may necessitate emergency repairs in extremes of inclement weather.

Required Functional Competencies to Successfully Perform Job Duties.
Knowledge/Technical: Performs a limited variety of recurring and related tasks/functions using basic knowledge of electronic principles and use of standard tools and test equipment. Ability to read and understand schematic and wiring diagrams and maintenance manuals. Ability to systematically troubleshoot standard electronic devices or systems.

Problem Solving: Identifies and resolves standard/routine problems with electronic devices, equipment, systems through routine inspection and preventive maintenance/testing, after system/equipment failure, or when updating equipment with new technologies. Operates standard test equipment to troubleshoot and repair electronic devices or systems that are well documented with wiring and schematic diagrams and factory maintenance manuals. Resolves problems with hardware and software.

Safety and Health Compliance: Performs tasks and duties safely to avoid danger to self and others. Follows applicable regulations, codes, policies and procedures. Identifies and informs supervisor of potential safety problems. Warns others of potential hazards. Uses appropriate protective equipment following established protocols. Incorporates accident prevention and corrective measures in work related activities. Follows appropriate post-emergency procedures.

Pay will be commensurate with applicant competencies, budget, equity and market considerations.
