1st Class Utility Lineman - Forest City Operations

1 JOB OBJECTIVE

To provide outstanding customer service to the members of Rutherford EMC by constructing, operating, maintaining, and repairing the cooperative’s overhead and underground electric utility distribution and transmission power lines and their associated equipment and to restore electric service promptly, safely and efficiently when interrupted regardless of time of day, night or weather conditions. If unable to find a qualified first class lineman, consideration may be given to lineman with less experience who could advance with training.

First Class Lineman is expected to perform any and all of the duties of the previous positions without close supervision.

After having demonstrated the abilities to work effectively as a First Class Lineman on the job, the First Class Lineman receives progressively more challenging assignments toward achieving the skills and knowledge necessary for a First Class Lineman ELC.

2 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs routine line work, both underground and overhead construction, line maintenance and electrical service. Effectively works on energized lines without supervision
  • Effectively meets job qualification standards as required by OSHA
  • Understands all circuits used on the system and the related safety requirements
  • Reads and accurately interprets maps, specifications, staking sheets and complex diagrams
  • Assists in substation operation and maintenance
  • Uses all types of fault locating equipment, both primary and secondary
  • Traces and locates buried cable as necessary
  • Visually checks lines, poles, insulators, transformers for damages or unsafe conditions and reports same to immediate supervisor
  • Performs all duties in accordance with Safety Rules and Regulations as established by the Cooperative. Must be trainable in the application of CPR and First Aid.
  • Responsible for tools and material assigned to the vehicle on which employee is working as well as the general good housekeeping of vehicle.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled safety meetings and training programs.

4. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Preferably has completed the Apprentice Lineman Program which qualifies him as a First Class Lineman; or comparable experience.

5. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, maps, staking sheets and complex diagrams. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Ability to read, write, and understand sequential processes. Requires proven ability to perform all types of related line work. Working knowledge of the national electric code. Knowledge of first-aid, line materials and tools and their us. Ability to apply craft techniques, processes and principles. Must demonstrate initiative and judgment in decision-making. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.6. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Requires a valid Class A North Carolina Commercial driver’s license and medical card.

7. PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk on uneven terrain, including up and down hills; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required to do this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must reside within a 30-minute response time from home to the Forest City district office.
  • During extreme power outages, must be able to work long hours and drive in extreme weather conditions.
