Primary: ASU Preparatory Academy Polytechnic Campus (Mesa); may be asked to assist at other sites

POSITION SUMMARY:

To scale our current impact, ASU Prep is advancing a major expansion program taking fundamental responsibility for the communities we serve.

The Microschool Personalized Learning Advisor (PLA) serves as the main point of contact for an assigned group of students in the ASU Prep Microschool Local and Hybrid programs to guide and advise students to achieve social, emotional, and academic success. The high school PLA will lead cohorts of 9th-12th grade students, four days a week at either the ASU MIX Center, ASU West campus, ASU Tempe campus, or ASU Prep Downtown Phoenix campus. The elementary PLA will lead a cohort of 3rd-6th grade students three days a week at the ASU Prep Polytechnic STEM Academy location, and may support one other location one-day a week. The PLA is a content generalist that will counsel, motivate, and advise in order to help all students meet their own educational and personal goals. At the direction of the Director of Strategic Initiatives, as well as the Microschool Program Manager, the PLA shares responsibility for all aspects of the Microschool program including, but not limited to: academic and social-emotional curricular programming, the collaboration with ASU Prep’s Digital content teachers, as well as ASU Faculty to implement innovative cross-curricular projects, collection and communication of student academic and behavioral data to analyze and communicate with families, and assessing individualized student progress. The PLA will provide academic guidance and support to ASU Prep Digital students in all subject areas, as well as plan and implement engaging in-person project-based instructional and activities, in support of the digital curriculum, ASU Prep’s Profile of a Learner competencies, and/or college and career pathways. PLA assists in the day to day operations of the Microschool program(s) of which they are assigned. The PLA assists in the instructional guidance of the Microschool program in full alignment and partnership with ASU Prep Digital, local experts, and ASU collaborating faculty.

QUALIFICATIONS:
    Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent.
    Minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching, academic coaching, social-emotional counseling, and/or college-going support for students.
    Project-Based Learning experience preferred.
    Flex classroom/Modern classroom experience, and/or Design-Thinking background preferred.
    Content experience in: Humanities, Science, Math, English, Foreign Language, Electives, and Professional Guidance/College Readiness.
    Experience with innovative technologies and online learning, highly preferred.
    Mesa specifically: Experience in mixed media arts, digital media and/or filmmaking highly preferred.
    Bilingual in Spanish, desired but not required.
    Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Teacher of record for the PBL elective class, and is responsible for the entirety of daily programming.

    Spends 80% of working hours in direct contact with students and/or guardians in-person, and 20% via phone calls, or Zoom meetings.
    Responsible for implementation of an innovative cross-curricular quarterly exhibition of work created with students and ASU Prep Digital teachers and ASU faculty.
    Responsible for teaching one Project-Based Learning elective course (aligned to digital curriculum or college and career pathways), and supporting students in taking concurrent college courses.
    Supports ASU Prep Digital teachers in all subject areas, acting as an intermediary, advocate, and/or organization support.
    Directly supports an assigned group of students to serve as point of contact for student onboarding once the initial enrollment process is completed.
    Responsible for the development of full-day programming, including, but not limited to: thematic projects, community-building activities, academic coaching, social emotional mini-lessons and presentations to support students’ progress towards ASU Prep’s Profile of a Learner competencies.
    Implement Restorative Practices and develop behavior management systems, in collaboration with the Program Manager.
    Takes students through the ASU Prep Digital Student Orientation either individually or as a group, and plans in-person orientation and team building activities for the specific site.
    Provides individualized support to all Microschool students based on identified risk factors/needs including academic, socio-emotional, and other potential issues, and helps to develop individual plans for success.
    Works with each assigned student weekly to develop an evolving ILP (Individualized Learning Plan) to include realistic goals that will contribute to the academic and personal success in high school; develop relationships that foster development conversations; motivate students to achieve educational goals.
    Conducts ILP progress sessions with students and their families a minimum of 2x throughout the school year.
    Counsels and advises students in-person, as well as by phone, email, text and other available online technologies.
    Closely tracks students’ progress on ASU Prep’s LMS (Canvas), through communication and analytics, to ensure class attendance and academic progress, and provides communication with students, families and instructors.
    Works with students to ensure a solid academic plan and ensure continued enrollment in the program.
    Provides counseling on college and career preparation and resources at key points in support with ASU Prep Counselors or Learning Success Coaches prior to graduation.
    Works with Program Manager to conduct virtual information sessions, open houses, and other community events, as assigned.
    Resolves problems by clarifying issues; researching and exploring answers and alternative solutions; implements solutions; escalates unresolved problems and follows up to ensure resolution of each issue.
    Works collaboratively with other departments and services, across ASU Prep as well as ASU to understand processes, systems, and services and to resolve student issues.
    Works with the Program Manager, an on-site Learning Facilitator and ASU Prep Digital team on successful student support.
    Provides proper and thorough documentation of interactions and processes as they evolve through ASU Prep Digital weekly Infinite Campus documentation protocol.
    Site visits with families, if and when needed.
    Acts as a liaison between student, digital teachers, family, and Program Manager.
    Participates in all program meetings, trainings, and committees, as scheduled.
    Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.
