You'll be coaching a team of child welfare staff working together to achieve the safety, well-being, and permanency of abused or neglected children and success in providing services for families in our communities.

This is a 2 year Career Mobility Opportunity.

This recruitment is open only to current employees of the Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS). Only current DCFS employees will be considered for interviews.

An active Social Service Worker or a higher, related license (Certified Social Worker, LCSW, etc.) with the State of Utah is preferred.

Pay starts at $25.90.

Principal Duties
DCFS Lead Workers perform caseworker duties in one or more of the areas in substance abuse, victims of domestic violence, and services for people with disabilities; while assessing needs for children, youth, and families and facilitating change in regards to abuse, exploitation, and/or neglect. Lead Workers assist Program Managers with coaching and mentoring team members, functionally supervise staff in the Program Manager's absence, and perform the following tasks:

  • Carrying a reduced caseload, which includes CPS, foster care, and/or in-home cases.
  • Preparing detailed case documentation including: intake records, investigation summaries, child and family assessments and/or service plans, risk assessments, social summaries, activity logs, and case histories.
  • Assisting and/or mentoring team members with coordinating services with the court, community partners, placement providers, and other collateral agencies as needed to support children and families receiving services.
  • Coaching team members in assessing and documenting client needs; developing and implementing service plans to meet those needs.
  • Assisting the Program Manager to provide consultation, case staffing, and in assessing needs for on-going agency involvement.
  • Providing input on performance evaluations and disciplinary actions occasionally.

Ideal Candidate
The model candidate for this position is someone who:
  • Is a current DCFS employee.
  • Possesses a current social service worker license or higher related license in the State of Utah.
  • Has at least two years of DCFS casework experience.
  • Possesses a current valid driver's license.
  • Is adept at interacting professionally with all levels of management while managing a diversified workload and challenging situations.

Supplemental Information

  • Travel required; if you use your personal vehicle to perform the duties of this position, approved mileage is reimbursable through State Finance.
  • All DCFS job offers are contingent upon passing a Background Screening Application (BSA).

Physical Requirements
  • Moderate – Some of the work performed requires some physical exertion. You may be required to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend; crouch; stoop; stretch; reach; lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.), e.g. lifting a small child in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
